crankshaft
hi, Is repairing multimatic gear box different from a normal gear box? Are there good repairing places in sri lanka for multimatcs? thanks
Elvis_Pil
when you say normal I assume you mean non-multimatic gear boxes- I dont know much about this- but honda multimatics are CVT so you will need a specialized person for the job, as its far more complex than normal ones. As far as I know there are not many people in SL who can do this job. The common practice is to simply change the whole gear box in case of a fault- I think this would be a good option as the wear and tear on belt driven automatics are anyway high so if the gear box has done around 100k it makes sense to replace it rather than trying to restore it. You could also convert it to manual easily if its a pre 2000 model Edited May 3, 2008 by Elvis_Pil
priya
hi, Is repairing multimatic gear box different from a normal gear box? Are there good repairing places in sri lanka for multimatcs? thanks Listen!one of my friends bought a Civic RS 1999 Multimatic. after riding it for 2 months gearbox busted! Checked with agents for price and they said a thumping Rs:250,000 and since he couldn't afford it checked with second hand ..and that Rs50,000/=. He had no choice but to replace second hand and that too got busted after 4 months now..Next he bought a civic SIR II in this reverse gear always jumps forward He was so frustrated he gave up honda and now into Mazda....I begin to think if its something wrong with person or something wrong with the model....or Finally with the brand(which I don't think it is!) Since I see so many Civic RS's running around. If you want more gearbox info give me a buzz I can give you his contact so to see how he will praise the CVT! leonardo
my take on this whole thing is be very careful when buying any used vehicle with a CVT gearbox especially if there is no proper vehicle service history. most of the time the owners would not have replaced the transmission fluid at all, and those who have would not have replaced it with CVT fluid which causes all sorts of a problems. strange but true that A*W are very reluctant to replace the CVT fluid in primeras because they say once you replace it the gearbox will fail. that doesn't help. if the agents are too scared to replace it and take responsibility, who will? RACERSEDGE
yep priya go for the manual..its totally a diffrent car than the mltimatic..check out dilans car on a satday night @ pilla..u can feel the differance..too bad kris sold his baby...yep lot of multimatics around mate
Elvis_Pil
@ Leonardo- interesting point on the Primera's - I thought it was just me but A*W insist on running CVT fluid upto and beyond the reccomended Km's- they get very defensive, when you wanna be proactive and change the stuff early
jaga
All CVT gear box users have to change the CVT gear box oil in every 20000 km for safer side. Oil quality change is the basic reason for CVT gear box malfunctioning. This is not because of HONDA make. This problem is commen in all brands. If u have problem with the CVT gear box might as well you go for normal Automatic gear box.

I busted mine as well ( Honda Fit ARIA - CITY ).. Its got a manufacture fault on it... I had to replace the Transmission ... The agents really Rip u apart... I got mine repalced by a guy working for Sta**ord... Dude is reasonable and knows whats he's doing... He even showd me a CVT belt removed from a busted EK3 transmission.. MadMMX
Jeez - all this is a bit scary. Didn't realise that the rs multimatic was prone to failure. Hasn't someone been able to get down the service manual and also look up the recommended service procedure ..etc ? I mean apart from the fluid change since it is a belt I'm sure there must other parts that wear out as well. Hasn't Stafxxxxd been able to refer this ? Had the service manual cd for my HRV ages ago though it was a 2wd manual and I must say it was pretty comprehensive on the service and repair procedures. Cheers, Madmmx
MadMMX
Anyway further to my previous post here's the honda service manual sections for the multimatic transmission for the 01 civic upwards. http://autoban.com.ru:8080/manual/i45Dcontents.htm Makes for interesting reading. Unfortunately don't have a honda anymore. Cheers, MadMMx
GTAm
Shocking to see that even Japanese manufacturers that are ranked so highly in reliablity surveys have problems like this. Maybe owners of Alfas with the problematic selespeed boxes will feel a bit better reading this thread .

ash
My P11 had a CVT gear box, but never had any problems with it. The CVTs’ are very good and responsive. But you have to take care of it, especially when it comes to changing oil. My P11 had a Hyper CVT box and the recommended changing intervals for Hyper CVT oil (NS1) is every 60,000km’s. But I did mine as soon as I bought it since I didn’t know the exact mileage the previous owner had done since his last change. Then I again changed in 30,000km’s. If you take care of the CVT you won’t have any problem with your box. Never experienced any problem with changing CVT with the AMWs’. I took it to a service station (not Pitstop) once and asked them to do the normal service (exterior & interior). One of the supervisors asked me whether I want to change the oils. I just inquired abt the oils they have. He recommended Sh*ll and some other ATF (I mean ATF not any CVTs’) . Imagine if the owner doesn’t know anything abt the difference between CVT & normal AT, what could have happened. I called staff*ord and they asked me to bring the vehicle to them to refill with correct fluid. According to them filling with ATF does not have a short term effect.. (its not like pumping diesel to a petrol vehicle). Edited May 12, 2008 by crankshaft

evergreen
How to identify a car with CVT by a little inspection. Do all CVT's have gear shift button on the stearing wheel? 95-98 cvt civics has the shifter knob on the shifter panel. 99-00 civics has the switch on the steering. and if u open the bonnet and look carefully, you can see the gearbox code M4 VA for all JDM versions and S4VA for singapore versions. this is the ek 3 mmt gearbox code. hope this helps.
