Carburetor Prob On A Lancer Ck2

guys, i drive a Lancer CK2 YOM1996 which is a carburetor model. The car is in brimming condition except the fact that the Carburetor is in bad shape. I took it to carburetor banda twice, but he concluded that the piston was bent and i will have to replace the entire carb. He did a temp job but the car misses pretty badly on low gears till the engine heats up. I could taste what i had for dinner every morning when i drive to work cos of the jerks...;) Appreciate your advice on a coupla things;

1. Is there any other expert mechanic i can get a second opinion on?

2. Could i modify another carb and replace it or could i fix the existing one?

3. What do you think are the consequences on using the car like this for some time?

4. How much would a new carb/repair cost?

well what i heard from ..this bnda guy is expert on mitsubishi carbulators..didnt u check prices from him n as he lives in panchikawatta..sparesa are free n eacy to get from 'watta' few meters away..he did a good job on my friends cb version..so this ck versions comes with carbs too..interesting...

Apart from the carb , have you checked theother systems of the engine eg:ignition system, for it may also cause irratic driving .

I have also heard that when this guy finds a problem which he cant figure out he just recomends a carb be replaced as most of the time the recon carbs come with the jap factory settings, and after replacement the car runs like a dream. you don't need a so called specialist to get that done do you?

I suggest taking the car to one of the many tuning guru's this forum is familiar with.

don't have experience with this banda fella so can't comment on his expertise and skills but he seems to be highly recommended by many AL regulars so i'm assuming he has proved himself at least to a point with his carby skills

But at the same time what beats me is that how this car runs ok after warming up if the problem is with the carb piston being bent :unsure:

If this is the piston i'm thinking of...that thing getting bent will make the throttle more "sticky"... maybe be when you rev up and let ya foot off the pedal it might get stuck there at the high rev spot without smoothly coming down to idle cos the damn piston is bent and getting stuck inside the carby body...

don't really see how it can get better once the motor warms up ????

can it be bad sparksplugs, ignition coil????

hey, thanks alot for sharing all your opinions guys. Well i'm not that filled in on the carb situ so dont know what exactly the prob is which is why i wanted a second opinion. Probably he'll have a different view on sorting out the problem.

The plugs are fine, thats what i checked first when it started to miss. Just that the miss gradually reduces when i drive for long hours....

well try taking it to Vasantha's garage in baseline road and see what he thinks of the situ...

Carburetor Banda was famus Carburator repairer according the information I have he is no more.

His son is following his fathers foot steps. Carburetor Banda lived near Urugodawatha close to Kelaniya Bridge.

Any three Wheel driver on that road will give you the road directions.

Do you have a mechanical distributor or Electronic one ? Because if its mechanical then i would check the platinum points and the condenser. As suggested if the cold start system failure then probably you shouldn't have damn rough engine as you say. Because i had used two cars where on had a electrically controlled choke and a manual choke which both of them they were not working.

Hi,

I too own a Lancer ck1 1999 carb model which came brand new to Sri Lanka. 

Reference to your description it could be couple of things which leads to this issue in this model. If you consider the carb, it purely works with vacuum pressure generated due to piston movement. Since you mentioned that it was diagnosed as petrol metering piston bent and it is something which should be physically checked with necessary tools. To bent or warp this piston is a rare situation unless the system is exposed to extreme heat condition. Probably the metering needle connected to the piston could be bent or the special coating in the piston could be damaged which leaks vacuum pressure and increase the friction. Please check these components thoroughly. Run the engine and once it gets warmed up to the operating temperature slowly open the throttle plate and see the movement in the piston. check the opening at the idle position and check the movement when you open throttle. It should move freely without getting stuck at any point. There are vacuum pathways inside the piston holder and most of the time they get plugged up with carbon or dust. If the piston movement is  not consistent. Remove the piston holder cover. once it is removed check the sliding movement of the piston inside the ball baring track in the piston holder. if it is smooth then ok. Otherwise clean it with carb cleaner or petrol and lube it slightly to get a better and smooth motion. Check for any scratches or damage inside the holder.

If above is ok, since you mentioned that car runs bit ok when warms up, I feel that you should check the auto choke system. There is a Vax choke system which works using the heat of the engine coolant which comes in to your carb. When it is disassembled you can see that there are few vacuum controlled gates or switches in it. You have to check whether they are working and if not clean them with carb cleaner or petrol and must change the gasket. Blow some low pressure air in to these path ways and see whether the gates open. If it is ok check the base gaskets and the "ebonite" spacer in between for vacuum leaks. If they are bad change with new gaskets. If every thing checks out then there are O rings in the main jet mechanism. There are 2 O Rings in the main jet and a another inside the jet adjustment screw which needs to be changed frequently since they go bad very often. There are another O ring inside the pilot air screw which is very essential to adjust the A/F mixture and another in the anti dieseling valve. These are the main O Rings which affects and controls the vacuum path ways inside the carb. Try replacing these. Then there is a accelerator pump mechanism which provides additional fuel shot every time you depress the gas pedal. Clean this path way and check the membrane of the pump for any faulty. If every thing checks out finally I can say that there is no major issue in your carb.

If above doesn't fix your car try checking your ignition current distributor and spark plug wires. Distributor consist of inbuilt ignition coil, mechanical advance unit, vacuum advance unit  pulse generator coil, igniter mechanism, rotor mechanism, Rotor cap and finally spark plug wires. Check any of these components are faulty which could lead to miss firing or bad ignition spark. There is a guy called Sarawana (0755120017) at walipara (panchikawatta), who do distributor work.

I hope that I gave you some idea how to fix your problem or some guidance where to look for.

      My father has gone ninja about getting one, despite being the new hype/fad here these are common across the world and I've seen a few cross 100,000km in Nepal and Australia.
      Seal - Looks nice, very premium interior but too low for my applications
      Sealion - Very Premium, feels very well built, BUT that 1.5L on that reasonable chunk of car with a measly 18KW battery seems like a recipe for trouble, incase they sink in value at least the fuel economy must justify that (They say it's a BYD engine - though the lore is it is a hyundai engine)
      Atto 3 - Most sold from their lot apparently, common af, Seems to be the best bang for buck IMHO, Its electric since BYD is famed for that, Interior is kinda good, the thing is larger than a vezel but not too large like the Sealion, cheap mobility I guess with less things to go wrong
      Dolphin, almost a smaller atto and again too car like and not suited for my application.
      JK nailed it on the price and distribution but the only guaranteed thing here is the lot are gonna muck up the aftersales. The Kandy center staff behave like the crew from a Govt. post office.
      What are your thoughts and opinions? Could this be the next Wagon R or is this a passing fad like the Micros of 2000s-2010s?
