Pericles
Nice subjects What happened to the 40D? There seems to be an AF issue when viewing these on larger sizes, like the AF locked onto the wrong target. Mani
I've been shooting with the Nikon for couple of weeks now. For action shots, it's not as good as the 40D. So far I'm disappointed in the Nikon's performance. I'm going to play with it a little more and see if I can get it to focus better on the subject that I'm shooting. Out of the 800 or so shots today, I could only salvage about 200.

Mani
Anyone here shoots with a Nikon D300? I'm getting mixed signals from people when I have them compare the D300 to 40D. While I agree the Nikon has a higher megapixel rate but how is it for actions shots?

I was reading somewhere that Nikon has a superior metering system hence uses less metering zones than Canon, but a weaker AF system, so to compensate in the marketing it has a 51 point AF to 40D's 9. Anyway, the lens will have a significant role to play too. Personally, I'd check the 50D. New processor with more capability than the 40D. 15mpx. Should be available next month. Some guys go ball out on these canyons. You see at least 2-3 riders helicoptered to a hospital every weekend. There is at least one fatality a month in the canyons around LA. This is what it's like every weekend if the sun is out. I got here sort of late, in the early afternoon. By then most of the sport bike riders are gone and all the cruisers on Harley Davidsons are out. I'm going back this Satuday & Sunday morning to catch the sport bike guys in action. Should be interesting.

You're the fourth person who asked me to wait for the 50D . My bro has the D300. I'm going to hijack that for this weekend to see how that one shoot. It should fall between the 40 & 50D and should be a good comparison.
Pericles
I actually tried out a D80 with a 18-200VR lens over the weekend. I thought the focusing was a bit slow. But that might have been coz it was outside at night.

On fast moving objects, you have to acquire the target well in advance and then follow it to your shutter point. The 40D will acquire the target much sooner and snap 2-3 frame burst by the time the Nikon hits one frame. I'm very anxious to see how the D300 performs. I played around with it inside the house for a little bit and it seems to acquire the target just as quickly as the 40D, even with low light and a zoom lens. I should have a better idea, this weekend, on the D300's performance in real life situations with fast moving objects.
