i always preferrd a supecharger whine over a turbo whistle. but the merc engines bar the v8s and v12 sounds very wrong. do sound like a hoover and a very old one at that.

as for upgrading the power on a supercharger, its somewhat pointless compared to upgrading turbos. cos the efficiency of the supercharger starts dropping quickly as its made to run ever faster. i.e. it'll be sapping more engine power giving out only minute gains. for example an eaton mp45 would work at its best at 7psi. but when u upgrade to smaller pulley it'll start becoming inefficient after 9.5 psi. but that said turning out a smaller pulley for a supercharger is not a particularly hard job. but with such a tiny pressure increase u r only looking at a 5-10% horsepower gain.

Can't agree with you on the supercharger vs turbocharger whine, however, currently owning a Legacy STI, I'm [heavily] biased!! :) You can't beat the sound of a v8 though!

In aus, the s/c used on the C180 was slightly different to the one used on the C200 with the same engine. A few guys with 180's did the swap to the C200 kompressor - it allowed a better power gain - upto about 145kw (vs 105kw standard at the fly) - I'm not sure of the figures in hp sorry.

I checked the fuel consumption on the e240 today - it's around 4.5-5 in Colombo, and outstation (eg.a 70km straight run) jumps to around 10. Stop start is the killer.

@Devinda:

Not the best pic, and I've been a bit lazy to do some decent pics of her, these were taken by my detailer after it was given a cut and a coat of swisswax in Jan this year. will do some when I get back to Melb:

I've changed the grille since that pic was taken, and also the grille, to a Corazon Grille which looks like this (in black obviously :) ).

Got a few more mods in the pipeline once I get some time in 09, and end up with around 200-210kw at the wheels. It was dyno'd stock at 156kw atw, however done a few mods since then, and it's running rich so that figure can improve with just some basic tuning as well.

what a beauty. i went and saw one of these at a car sale in kohuwala last afternoon. obviously it wasn't the sti version, but it was a manual and i was a bit disappointed with its cheap looking interior. i didn't take it for a test drive though. considering looking at one next year. completely OT i know but does anyone on this forum have any experiences with owning this car in sl?

ah! i forgot the superchargers from the superior kompressor models can be dropped into the 180. however if i remember correctly there was no e180 kompressor. the base model was the e200 kompressor. yes its got the same engine as a c180 and yes its only got a bigger supercharger to make it worthy of the 200 badge. but like msport said u can go one step further and install a supercharger from a 230. but then how much would that conversion cost? last time i tried importing a supercharger from germany it was already over 600000 rupees before taxes!!! superchargers are very expensive because of their close tolenrances. i suggest u steer clear away from them unless you know what you are doing.

as for the whine listen to something like a Roush Mustang at full chat. sounds like a jet.

You're correct, D*m0 used to have that place that sold the second hand vehicles, but it's no longer there - and I checked there at the time (around 2005?) and found their prices pretty high compared to what people were asking in the private market.

you were spot on about the high prices mate. i found them to be 0.5 - 1 mil above market price. i've heard they quote pretty low when you want to part exchange you current merc to a new one from them. if that's the case D*mo must be making a killing by selling used cars too

thats a lovely piece of kit ! :)

i recall a BMI group test that had it pitted up against the Fuga , a Tom's tuned Crown and Jag and it performed admirably - been a fan of the new gen Legacy/Liberty nearly as much as the old ones since!

I think most of the high end brands (BM, Merc, Audi) have been selling used cars on behalf of their existing clients, given the reducing market for new cars in that segment. Every "middle man" in the process has to make a buck - and given how few of the W211 there would be in SL, I think it wouldn't be too hard to put the word out and find a well loved example, and then negotiate a reasonable price - minus the dealers commission!

@JadeyBlitzen - One of the reasons I sold my Merc was, I was getting the itch to start modifying again - and frankly, the Merc's are not cars to be playing with unless you (or your mechanic) knows what they're doing. The thing is run by such complex integrated managment systems now right down to the audio, that a small stuff up or component mismatch could lead to a costly repair. All the aftermarket bits are also ridiculously expensive - the kleeman pulley and ecu upgrade for the new 1.8 engine was going to cost around $4k AUD for the parts alone, and then dyno time. I think it upped the power to around 130kw though (from 105), and give you a very nice torque curve from around 2000rpm.

Do you get the C230k in the UK? They dropped it in Aus, and I thought it was only available to the US markets? Their new CDI's are pretty good too, pity not available in SL. Re the mustang.. oh yeah.. I haven't heard the rouche, but a friend of a friend has a Shelby replica and that thing is out of this world. I have Eleanor (gone in 60 sec) on my dream car garage list.. one day.. if we still have oil/petrol left in the world :P

I miss my E39 :(

well now i can see how a Subaru would be more condusive , if not ideally suited for that kinda thing :D

Yep, and having had a fairly worked WRX, the Liberty was a good compromise with 3 kids + fitted the performance criteria and I know the EJ25T motor fairly well now :) The STI is based on the Spec-B which also includes the STI torsen front LSD, rear LSD and the 6 speed STI box out of the impreza STI, as well as all the other suspension goodies.. bilsteins etc. This also sits 15mm lower on the STI springs, only 300 of this model were made for aus in 2007. The wheels are made by enkei for STI - 18", and P-zero Rosso tyres. The MY07 model also got electric memory seats, full leather with sti stitching, different colour gauges to the normal liberty (red - to denote STI) and upgrade McIntosh sound system with a centre speaker as well - although the sub is a bit weak.

The E39 was in Lanka though, while I was working here. I had to sell it last year as I went back to Aus for some work and fell sick, was fairly serious and docs said to stay put for a while - 18 months later, we're back only for a holiday, as have to go back to aus for a bit more treatment/checkups but decided to get rid of the 525 as with fuel prices going up etc, i figured i'd sell it while i could make a profit (or break even).

I have well and truly hijacked xXx's thread - sorry dude.. let's get back on topic!!

C230 is like the base model here cos the 180 and the 200 is considered a bit sluggish. as for diesels i'd always go for BMWs if im in that market.

look up roush mustang on youtube. trust me you'll love it. i think you should get one made as well then. i remember this one that turned up in the classifieds a few months back. it was £40000.

ah so that explains why you've been MIA all this time - hope things are better now machan

hmm not sure but it's a standard STI accessory. the wrx's get the 17" version - it's not standard on the STI models, it's an optional extra, however was fitted standard to the lib sti's for the aus limited edition models in combination with the Pzero rosso's.

Unless you mean the 10 spoke 18" which came on the 3.0 RB's? Which was a different design. I'll see if i can find a pic.

Things are better now thanks.. downside is I've also put on weight as the sickness made me lose weight.. from 86kg down to 65kg at the worst time.. now 'm 90 and i'm really feeling like a slob!! So have to tackle that issue now.. maybe less cruising around in the Lib and more walking or bike riding lol.. :)

my mistake - i took a closer look at the RB320 rims and they aren't the same as this

lol i weight the same as your worst on any given day!

...biking is one way to shed the pounds , and beat the fuel prices too! (should they ever increase again!) very very OT, but i knew of a person who opted to cycle instead of using his S4 and his brother left a Gallardo to jog!

hmm.. i wonder if i'll ever get the chance to even make such a choice!! lol  are they in lanka? coz while they're cycling, an S4 could come in handy for me at the moment.. since I have no car to use regularly :P jkzz..

boyz had a look at a E240, according to the vehicles VIC the engine capacity was 2597cc. is this the normal capacity of a E240 (as i thought its 2400cc) or has the car been badged wrong?

I think I mentioned it in an earlier post, the badges are sometimes for namesake with BM and Merc, for instance the e46 320ci was actually a 2.2L i6! I was pretty sure the e240 was a 2.6L, started in the w211's I think or maybe even the latter of the previous model. Nice smooth engine though, although I feel the BM inline 6's are smoother and sound better.

the power delivery on the BMW 6's are just so consistently "creamy" ( for a lack of a more appropriate word  ) through the rev range

the E36 323i was in fact a 2.5L and the E39 540i , a 4.4L afaik

and the exhaust note.. mm.. The golf r32/r36 exhaust note is superbly sweet as well!!

It's a pity the govt doesn't allow diesel's into the country, a friend of mine in aussie recently bought (ordered - hasn't got it yet) the x5 with the 200kw diesel twin turbo six and its a monster of an engine given the economy it gets too!
