imho that sounds like a tranny problem (like duh ) and you'd have to remove the gearbox to fix it...

there are shift forks, shift rods, idler shafts etc that can be causing an issue and i double you can get to the bottom of it without removing the gear box.

maybe someone else who has had a similar experience can chime in

If its just a skin-wound you can probably fix it without taking the transmission apart...

Most current manual gear levers rest on a kind of a nylon ball. When you use excessive force (and with time) this wears out and the gears loose precision. Hence it might not engage or disengage nice and clean. So if this is the issue, replacing this nylon ball/joint would solve it, and can be done without meddling with the gear box itself.

Or your transmission lever it might be working on mechanical linkages. Once again if it's a case of wearing out this might be the solution. (had this problem on mine with the 2nd gear)

If you're unlucky it could be what ripper says and that means taking the transmission apart.

Another (off chance) situation is if the clutch cable's lost a bit of tension and is a bit slack. And this doesn't completely disengage the clutch at gear changes, hence making shifting a bit harder. But this should affect all rather than just the 5th. But wont cost you anything to just check this too, before taking everything apart..

Whats your car, how much mileage it has clocked,

what is the play at the lever,

Also check the gear box mounts before removing the box.

Also a transmission fluid change could be a good starting point
