No tax change

Sunday, 03 October 2010 13:17

The government announced today that the vehicle import taxes will remain unchanged and requested the public not to be misled by false information.

There is no necessity to postpone or speed up the import of vehicles and other import goods unnecessarily because the taxes which are currently in effect will remain unchanged, Secretary to the Finance and Planning Ministry Dr. P.B Jayasundara announced.

Furthermore the Customs time limit for the clearance of imported goods has also been expanded till 8pm on weekdays and until 4.00pm on weekends to increase the speed of the clearance of imported goods.

wasnt the OP one of the main people who were quoting PBJ on further tax cuts :P.. and with newspaper cutting too.. may or may not be the OP but sure as hell there were people who'd bang their head on the wall saying there'd be tax cuts and to postpone buying a vehicle.

hard to fault the OPs on that as it's PBJ who keeps changing his mind... :P

except maybe we shouldn't believe anything PBJ says until it's gazetted.

Seems like a good decision. Few ppl I know were postponing there purchases and some were taking the bus while others were sticking into their old cars :D . Hopefully 2nd hand market too would drop a lil

Finally. Lets hope he'll stick to his word this time.

It looks like he has realizes only way to see a drop in prices is to increase the supply. I hope he's not trying to pull a fast one on the importers.

hmm... if the "taxes will increase in the november budget presentation" story was the dominant rumour, then prices should decrease

but if the "there will be a further reduction in november" story (a la Lankadeepa) was dominant, then prices should increase

actually prices will probably increase anyway because interest rates are reducing
