Hi Guys,

I am trying to help my parents decide on a new car, I am not in Sri Lanka at the moment so can't go around to car sales and check out prices, etc...

Basically my parents want to sell their car and buy an SUV was my dad has trouble getting in and out of the car as its pretty low.

Looking at possibilities, I was looking at the Toyota Rush and the Rav4, from what I've seen in the classifieds and the forums the Rush is around 4.8? Is that a fair market value? How much would a unregistered Rav4 go for?

Any other suggestions, I was thinking for the Kia Sportage and the Hyndai Tucson, any idea how much they are and how petrol efficient they are?

Thanks in advance..

If u realy need a suv buy the tucson

It's more stylish than the toyotas and surely more than the rav4 economical if u can try to go for a crdi

Hyundai owns kia so go for the tucson tough it's about 300k more

I think there are no issues in hyun's after 2006 new models came out

I use a santafe crdi 4wd manuel fuel eco - 21kmpl long 14kmpl colombo

No problums in th 3yrs i used it

Yet if u'r going for a car in that budget never go for a korean

Buy a toyota Prremio or Allion (ur-240 or reg-260)

Thanks for the reply, how much do you think a brand new tucson will be? Also do they come reconditioned to the market?

Sportage and the Tucson, is there really much of a difference??

And what about spare parts and maintainence costs for the tucson, what is your experience with the Santafe?

Again thats for the advice...

When i went to the company in july they said the tucson starts at 4mill without vat

yet to get a decent (high spec) one u'd have to spend about (5.5mill 2L petrol)

There is no spare part problems, yet it is advisable to inform company before periodic services.

Don' go for re-con hyun's cause they are assembled in Singapore (these broke down and gave the a bad reputation korean cars in 2000-2004yrs)

By the way u'r buying a brand new for less than a recon so u can use it for 3.5yrs more

Tucson and sportage share the same drivetrain

yet prestige (who also does bmw) gives u a good service than c*rm*rt.

and it is better to buy from the owner (hyn) than servant (kia)

+ don't expect my fuel eco's in the petrol it will be some what lower yet should be better than the rav4

Hi! daytona .. just adding my opinion....

personally i prefer European and American vehicles than Asian stuff.... most of the new jap and othr asian cars suck whn it comes to safety and durability...(Body strength).. so if ur willing to spend 4Mn.. and if you dont mind buyin recon and used vehicles... or if you REALLY MEAN S.U.V(Sport Utility Vehicle) and appreciate grade 1 machinery y not LR Defender..

but considering your fathers need(as he only needs smthing just "taller") i might suggest...

LR Free lander 3-4 mn

if u like Jap cars...thrz X-Trail,Rush,daihatzu Terrios, and dont 4get the toyota harrier..

i thnk you should consider land-rover Free Lander.. one of ma frndz has a diesel LR Free-lander(BMW engine) it does 15 Km/l.

Thanks again guys for the advice, my parents prefer to go for a recon or brand new vehicle just for peace of mind......they are old and they don't really have anyone to take care of these things for them whilst I am out of the country, so I prefer for them to go for a reasonable brand new/recon vehicle.

I agree the Freelander is a really nice vehicle but spares, etc will be pretty expensive and the brand new one will be out of the price range, won't it?

Anyone here own the new tucson and have any advice? I have read a lot about the older model's reliablility, etc but most of them seem to be resolved in the new model.

Also, can anyone confirm if the new one is still 4 mil + Vat?

Thanks again.

You have been bring up quite a number questionable points lately. Bit i'l like to call bull$h!t on this.. Singapore does not assemble any form of motor vehicle. Not Tuscans, not sportages, not N16s and no yaris.

Where do people get the idea that a country of which the manufacturing industry is going smaller and smaller by the day due to rising labour costs and lack of real-estate is assembling cars.

So you own both a SantaFe and a Montero Sport? Hmmm...

And it does 21kmpl? <_< Once a bloke posted that his Allion does 25kmpl. Hope your SantaFe is not the Hybrid version.

This doesn't quite coincide with your Display name now does it, Toyota Sucks?

I have no clue on the relative advantages/disadvantages of hyundai/kia, but this owner/servant analogy would mean it is better to buy VW than Audi, Tata than LandRover/Jaguar, and Geely than Volvo!

by any chance does it have a trip computer that can be configured to display mpg? cos then the numbers could be accurate (6 km/l = ~14 mpg, and 9 km/l = ~21 mpg) :)

reply-

Well u'r official driver must be drinking the rest of the fuel

In order to save -

>the world

>the fuel reserves (and the int.combustion engine)

>last but not least my wallet

I usually maintain a constant speed of 70-80kmph (unless in traffic)

And as u all said keep it in neutral for while running (bad habit)

Try these methods u will get similar figures

i'm talking about the manual one

by the way my friend has a santafe crdi 4wd diesel but it does only 10-12 (non-smooth driving)cause it is auto (shift tronic)

I called up the hyndai company today and the Tucsons (coming in with their European name now i35) starts at 4.6 (basic manual) and 4.8 (basic auto), takes about three months for delivery but they have a shipment coming in next month on which two of the vehicles haven't been reserved.

I think my parents really like this, anyone have any comments on :

- Running costs?

- Reliability

- Agents service, are they good quality or do they try to rip you off

- I know for Honda's there is a garage in Malabe that is as good as going to the agent, is there anything similar to Hyandai?

Thanks again for everyone's comments.

you maintain a constant 70-80 in Colombo? Besides the fact that thats waaay over the speed limit, where the heck do you maintain that? Just run up and down Marine Drive when there is no traffic? Even Galle Road, Baseline and High Level have traffic lights intermittently.

The options you have are rather "compact" SUV's, you know, not the real SUV. You could consider a Mitsubishi Montero 2000/01, but you might want to contact somebody on the GDI issue before buying. If you are looking for fuel efficiency Rav4 and Rush would be a better choice but it dosen't look right to me, and the Rav4 is way better looking than the rush.
