I need some advise on importing parts from overseas. I plan to get down a set of used doors for my 1992 hilux. when checked locally, it'll cost me around 60k+.

Will it be cheaper to buy it from exporters in japan, UK or australia?

60,000 sounds reasonable to me. Keep looking though, you may find something cheaper. If you calculate the cost of freight and taxes you will end up paying the same amount if not more. Now if you were importing small spare parts it would be a totally different story.

I got down a Alfa Booster and pump from Holland and GPO charged me only Rs. 960.

Yeah but that's a brake booster, not two doors. Size does matter.

I've got down quite a few parts from UK and they've mostly been cheaper than what I could find locally (if I could find them locally at all). But all of those parts were hand carried so managed to bypass the taxes. I have seen breakers selling doors, headlights, etc. on ebay although I don't know specifically about hilux parts.

but doors are obviously too big for hand carry or postage; so it will have to be sea freight. sea freight from UK costs about 100 pounds per cubic meter, and that's provided you give all the stuff to the shipping company (if they pickup it's more expensive).

if it's available locally for 60k I would say it's not going to be worth the hassle. but if you were going to get more stuff down it may be worthwhile.

Of course. However, if you can get hold of a shipper with an agent in the country of origin, you can load it as SEA freight and have it cleared here.

60k is abit too much for te doors. I was able to get all 4 doors with pannels for my lancer for 30k few weeks ago.

I have a contact who bring down spares from Sigapore. But i dnt knw if he could help you with the doors but give it a try.

PM me if you want the contact details

Cheers

Does any body know how to get down parts from UK to SL? Does somebody in UK or SL provide this as a service?

I get help from known people when they travel to UK - either I get stuff posted to wherever they are staying (if they are staying at a particular location for few days); or post the stuff to a friend in London who meets up with whoever is going from here. of course this doesn't work well for urgent requirements (unless someone just happens to be travelling at that time) and parts have to be small enough to fit in luggage and not too heavy.

I too would like to know if there's anyone who gets stuff from UK on a commercial basis (I know some people at panchi who do it from singapore), but in the meantime you can check around with your friends (and their friends) if there is someone travelling to/from UK. Esp. you might find someone coming down for Christmas holidays but you'd have to act quite fast to get the stuff to them on time!

for some parts it can be quite workable to get it sent by post (I once got a powersteering pump from israel!) - the postage actually cost more than the pump, but it arrived here in less than a week and was still the cheapest overall cost I could get for it. paid about 40% tax on the undervalued price of it @ post office. But not all sellers on ebay will post internationally, and especially if you plan to get down lots of stuff it's better if you can get it to some friend in the UK and have them put all the stuff in 1 box and post it.

Try from these used spare parts dealers.Compare prices and go for the cheapest. They are quite reasonable people and you can even bargain to a certain extent. Here are the telephone numbers.

Japan lanka Kalubowila 0112764639,Silva motors Bothalegama 0312256582,Sisira Gangodawila 0112820396,Keerthi Balangoda 071442233,Sarath Balangoda 0771098416.Importing by yourself I think is not a wise idea.(You may not get the right stuff, may cost more)

Kalashnikov.

I phoned all these places but last number which is in balangoda only have the stuff i want. they dont quote over the phone but i convince the sales guy to give a rough estimate. although it's way too high [rs. 60k for from 2 doors], the guy said prices could be drastically bargained. so i now have to visit them and see.

thanks for the valuable info.

Just thought of this...try contacting some part shops in kurunegala. I've seen more parts for vans there than anywhere else. You may be able to find a good price out there and make the drive worthwhile.

I'm also looking for trunk interior panels for 96 Honda Civic Ferio. They are available in ebay but shipping only to USA. Anyone know a way to find the above parts?

Anyone have tried the dealers mentioned in the link XAX in post no 6?
