Toyota Vitz 2007/2008 Audible Engine Sound

Question

Posted

Hi,

We just got our selves a Recon Vitz 1000CC (KSP90) 2007. Got it serviced and checked up a few days back before putting it on the road.

What is irritating is the loud engine sound. The engine basically roars when the gas pedal is put down, sounds somewhat similar to a diesel engine but not that loud. Pickup seems to be good but am uncomfortable with the somewhat audible engine roar when accelerating. Would like to know from other owners of the 2007/2008 1000CC Vitz if this was normal. A friend of ours having the same car says its the same with his, and the service station also agrees that it seems to be the norm on the 1000CC vitz. Quite appalling if this is the case, because the roaring sound is irritating sometimes. Can other owners confirm or comment on the same?

Any way to reduce the sound or suggestions for checking or fixing it?

Thnks,

V.

In my Corrlloa also having the same problem when the rpm is between 1.5 & 2 and i checked with one of mechanic and he said which is normal

Do u also hearing the noise when rpm between 1 to 2?

I wouldn't know the RPM because the Vitz does not have a RPM meter. But from what I can guess it should be between 1 and 2. Is you corolla a 121?

The 1000CC engine needs to rev to higher rpms to get the pick up you experience hence the noise. I assume your car is an auto ? Bigger engined cars have more torque and thus need to rev less to achieve the same speed so less audible noise.

ya , this is quite right , but not much thing to worry.

3 cylinder engine are bit noise than 4 cylinder ones.

I think this is happening when you quickly need an acceleration.

I've driven two KSP90 cars recently (both having mileage around 40,000) and this noise was there. I also agree that its quite annoying at first, but you'd get used to it soon :)

A friend of mine told me that he used 95-octane and the noise was lesser. But I could not try it.

Thanks guys for shedding some light into this. Heard the 1300CC SCP90 Vitz does not have this loud a noise, must be a 4 cylinder engine.

Also can someone confirm if the 1000CC engine has VVTi? Or is it only on the 1300CC I was not able to get proper confirmation from wikepedia. Also I'm guessing the gearbox on this is a CVT? That's what the station told me and that it is sealed and the oil can only be changed at the agents, but the change is not required for a couple of years. Any truth to this?

You have got to be kidding... The engine makes more noise when you put your foot down and this is a problem for you?...

I think the solution to your problem is to sell that car and buy that c******o Reva. Go Electric. No audible engine noise.

this is noticeable when you are first using a vitz, compared to other small cars.

What I meant was the noise is MORE audible in this hatchback in comparison to other similar cars or family compact sedans.

Exactly what I was implying. Good to get it confirmed. Our Vios is much more quite, definitely due to the larger engine and better noise shielding I suppose.

Anyone can shed some light on the CVT gearbox on this model, does it have a CVT? And only agents can get the it replaced due to it's sealed type make.

Since all JDM toyota's are dumped with CVT gearboxes now its gonna be nice song and dance when they fail due to people dumping the wrong oil and not changing the cvt oil on time. Anybody wants to make some money start importing recon CVT boxes now you will def be in business....

Maybe he was expecting the car to make an engine roar when brakes are used

More than shielding, it's the 3 cylinder engine like in a minivan giving such, they're not under proper balance and therefore gives more vibration than a 4 cylinder. Eg. only -- It's like an Indian 4 cyl bus vs. Jap 6 cyl bus, you can barely feel it's diesel in the latter as it's in both primary and secondary balance.

In your case, nothing to worry though it's quite irritating.

Yes all 1.0L Vitz made after 2005 have CVT GBs only, and it's better to stick with the agent in these new cars as some service stations tend to mess up and put ATF in CVT boxes, which would be the end of the GB.
