Dear friends,

I like to talk about CVT & AT transmition. Because so many Japanese used vehicles in Sri-Lanka. Most of peoples are doesn’t know about what kind of transmition in his vehicle. Can some one please post how we can find if these modern vehicles came with CVT or A/T? Is there any sign of CVT? What is the oil change interval of CVT?How can we check?

I know lot of car experts are in here. If your know any vehicle with CVT please post Vehicle Model, Year, oil change interval, type of oil and amount of oil.

This will very helpful for every body

Thanks

Well, you can always drive it and figure whether it's CVT or AT. Anyways, all your queries will be answered by a quick search on ye ole Google. :)

A simplest answer:::

Auto:

A conventional automatic transmission has a fixed number of rations (gears), which it changes between. In this respect it is similar to a manual transmission.

CVT:

A continuously variable transmission, also known as a CVT, uses a belt to allow the vehicle access to an unlimited number of gear positions. This has several advantages, such as improving the fuel economy of the vehicle.

How to Identify:

When driving a car with a CVT, you never hear or feel the transmission shift. It simply raises and lowers the engine speed as needed, calling up higher engine speeds (or RPMs).

Other Methods:

* Vehicle Technical Specifications by manufacture

There isnt any sure way of knowing until you drive it

You can hear a noise comming from the CVT system because CVT consist of a belt and two pulleys. The noise will increase as the belt wears.

laugh.gif If planetary gears and rings are worn in an A/T, then again you can hear noises too laugh.gif

In an A/T, usually gearing is P-R-N-D-3-2-L or similar while CVT has P-R-N-D-S normally. But that alone isn't a way to identify as it may differ with the manufacturer.

Some vehicles are neither of these.

It's P-R-N-D-2-1

So it's not a trusted method @all. heavily based on Manufacturer.

I was trying to emphasize on the S being there only in CVTs afaik

The "S" as per the picture is = to the "L" and can stand for SNOW since its the gear used in Snow driving ! :) and sometimes "S" is for Sports!

Are you saying Honda CVT sedans were made for snow or sports driving? True it's hard to get, but the OP wanted some way to know without driving or ripping apart the transmission and I told the only vague way present unless you check VIN numbers and frame numbers etc.

S for sports is normally a button isn't it?

but the OP wanted some way to know without driving or ripping apart the transmission

Normal A/T boxes have dip sticks to check transmission oil level.

Yeah but some cars that have cvt dont even come with a S position, the gears vary depending on the manufacturer. So there is no clear cut way of looking at the leaver and saying if its cvt or not. B)

In any case, knowing about how some cars are in some markets help. Eg: In case of new JDM Toyota's, Belta/Vitz with 2WD came with CVT gearboxes while the 4WD models came with normal A/T boxes. But brand new cars of those same models, come with 2WD coupled to the JDM 4WD engine and a normal A/T gearbox.

Mostly Cars with Variable valve timing technology came with CVT boxes. But there were also some without CVT too eg-Honda City 2001

Umm..... no. <_<

"S" position does not say the gear box is CVT always. Civic FD1 peddle shift mode has got "S" position but the gear box is AT.

1.on n17 Blubird Sylphy i have seen a badge "CVTC"

has it something to do with cvt?

2.when it says Triptonic,is it necessary to be CVT???

cant it be A/T with triptonic?

Variable valve technology became widely available on production cars before CVT. (E.g. DOHC)

:) and most of the nowaday cars equipped with VVT came with CVT boxes if they are A/Ts isnt it :)

Models that came with a CVT: the toyota Allion/Premio 2007 to present( 2nd generation) only for 2000CC and for the 2007 models in the first generation

: Nissan Bluebird G11 2000CC

: Nissan Primera and X-Trail ( not sure about it)

almost all new cars that have a engine bigger 1500CC come with a CVT

how to identify a CVT: well theres a difference in the gears in the CVT, CVT comes only with "P,R,N,D,S,B" this could vary from vehicle to vehicle

the D is for normal driving....just like the you get in a A/T...while the S stands for "sport" it is for powerful mode...and B is like the "L" in A/T

hope this helps you :)

I keep telling you, know your stuff. Sport isn't a "Powerful" mode, it just delays shifting gears so you can keep the engine in a higher rev band.

Your on a roll. Just not your day.

What can I say. Told you not to annoy me yesterday.
