Thanks for that info, what about the claims of being the fastest electric car ie 155mph, 0-60mph in 3.7s etc etc??? Wouldn't this type of thing be the way to go over the hybrids????

Production of the SP:01 is slated to start in August so we'll have to wait to verify Detrit Electric's performance numbers. By comparison, the Tesla Roadster also does 0-60 in 3.7 seconds, but top speed is limited to 125mph (to protect the electric motor from overheating).

The big technical hurdle with electric cars is getting the cost and weight of of the battery down while increasing the energy density. The battery alone in the Tesla roadster costs $30,000 to replace.

Aquas are brought down by the dozen to Sri Lanka. They were initially priced higher than Prii by the used car sellers but it has taken a plunge. A third-gen unreg Prius goes for around 4.4 - 4.5 Mill nowadays whereas an Aqua goes for around 3.7-3.8. The claim of Aqua doing much better on fuel than Prius hasn't held water in Sri Lanka. Users of both say they do around 23 to the litre, so the buyers actually have no reason to go for a smaller car.

Also I noticed a dip in the prices of used hybrids in Sri Lanka. 2009 Insights seem to be going at around 30-31 and Prii seem to be going at around 31-32. That's actually a depreciation of about 200k-300k for the ones who brought down these cars back in 2011.

The price plunge of the Aqua in SL is due to the yen going down, as Batteries wrote, and also because the supply of used Aquas in the Japanese market has increased somewhat.

Toyota began delivering the Aqua to Japanese customers only 16 months ago so most are still with their original owners. Used Aquas are in limited supply and still relatively expensive compared to used Prii. Over the next few years, as more and more used Aquas enter the Japanese used car market, we can expect the used Aqua prices to go down relative to the Prius, and popularity to increase.
