Carina Gt/4A-Ge

evergreen

Recommended Posts

dear friends,

need some inputs from all you guys on 4A-GE found in carina GT. (1998-2001)

how is the reliability of this motor? i assume the long standing toyota reliability is there too..

can we find spares for this engine without a hassle? (recon , brandnew)

any common issues associated with it?

is this an engine that any decent garage can handle?

and any other noteworthy info you all can share on this engine :)

thanks in advance

all tech details you can find on wiki, from the start to the present model of engine lineup, so u can get a gud knowledge about this.

i have a GT too... decent ride. parts are available with the agents m sure u can find from other shops as well... n i think any garage can handle the engine coz right now there are much more complicated engines available in the market.

but dont just give it to any bloke to fix it

if the engine is well cared for...it would be a decent buy. hv no issues with ma ride very pleased with it, no issues found so far

Never owned one- but from what i've heard from previous owners is that most spares are available locally. The Agents have the rebuild kit as well- which is usually needed around 150k mileage mark.

Would not take it to 'any garage' though- as normally simple things like cleaning the TB is tricky- since its a got a quad TB. Other than that tappets need to be adjusted regularly. Fuel is in the region of 7-8 and you'll need 95

95 fuel??

so this engine is technically a bit more different to an average engine?

Well I would not say its "not a a reliable daily driven, trouble free car" :)

The 1.8 Si maybe more economical though

agreed..but i feel the chances of things going wrong will be bit on the high side

Things are bound to go wrong in any car :)

Frankly if you are considering a Carina GT (or any proper GT version of a car), you would already know that it will not be a standard run on the mill version. The performance upgrades the car posses is what makes it attractive to some people, and whenever you have a special version of a car, it does mean that it requires special attention.

To be honest I do not think the GT is a difficult car to live with. The parts are available with the agents and other dealers (though not as easily available as the standard Ti and Si versions), the body parts are available, and with any performance engine you would need a mechanic who understands such engines. But if you are considering such a car, you would need that anyway, but there are plenty of good guys around. It's not going to be as good on fuel but hey who buys a GT for fuel efficiency ?

i never consider fuel efficiency as a prority.. :D as long as it gives me few years of trouble free running :) doesnt matter even if the things go wrong as long as you could rectify it with less hassle. for example say the 5A FE of a carina ti gives any trouble (hardly there will be any) i know for a fact that it doesnt cost much and spares are ample.

But it's not going to be as fun to drive :)

It sounds like your main priority is maintenance cost, and ease of maintenance. In that case you probably should go for a Ti or Si.

I wasnt trying to make u buy something else...what im saying is all GT versions or whatever special editions of cars r far more fun to drive than their normal versions....

Example Carina GT is more fun than the SI or TI

Pulsar VZR is more fun than the normal Pulsar

So if u wanna decide between the SI & the GT i would say go for the GT if u wanna have some fun :alc:

I'm sure Madmax would know even better. He had a Carina GT, VZR, SiR II hatch and SiR Sedan at various points. And a Glanza.

engine and body parts can locate without much trouble the only part that hard to come by is the ecu control box.
