2.6-2.9 mil for a 64- or 65- car???? :blink::unsure:

are you sure of the price???

he told us the prices as far as he knows. If you dont trust him or dont beleive his numbers, go look at a newspaper or make some phone calls without being an a$$hole wasting people's time. We all know that you just ask pointless questions for the same of asking.

Idiots like you who judge a car by its number plate might not be willing to pay that premium but people who are really passionate about cars wont even think about the number plate when they purchase a car.

BTW please stick to the troll thread that JD created for you without writing all sorts of garbage in threads.

does the top speed of these cars vary according to the engine??? i don't think the figures given in wikipedia are true!

That would be obvious wouldn't it :) ? If it was me I would buy a W124 and keep it in its original condition. It will retain more of its value that way (no offence to the quality work done by the converters) These aren't cars to be modified or upgraded. Nor are they cars to be driven fast. They were engineered like tanks, utterly reliable and offers levels of refinement even modern cars struggle to match. Last of the true Mercedes Benz's.

Well trying to test top speeds of a german or for that matter any car on Sri Lankan roads shouldnt be done, unless ur on a suicide mission.

no no no!! what im asking is the top speed of each engine!

Top speeds are for cars, not engines. You find different models of vehicles using the same engines, sometimes tuned different.

For ex, the VQ35 engines are found in sports cars (350Z) and SUVs (Murano). I'm sure the top speeds are different. Also found in the Clio V6, IIRC.

And anyway, if these Mercs can do over 155mph, they will most probably be electronically limited.

do you mean the max. rpm?

Nope, it could well be that they have different gearboxes. And maybe other things, like different wheel sizes, etc. Speculation only.

Mr Magnum,

Pray answer me, why do you want a Mercedes Diesel?

As the people in the forum have answered - these are solid cars, built well, and last a lifetime when loved.

As Peri said top speeds of most cars is limited to 155 MPH. So that should suffice in sunny SL.

When buying a used car - get your budget sorted and get the best car for the maximum cash. By that I mean not over paying but the best condition / loved car and you will be a happy chappie.

In my humble opinion conversions from petrol to diesel are not recommended- buy original & keep it original.

Hope you find your dream ride ,ideally a 300 D and post some pics when you do.

I myself am on the hunt for a W123 Petrol.......must convince spouse though :D

OP, where are you trying to go with this?

Apologies if I'm being myopic, but I can't understand anyone trying to buy an old E class mercedes being so concerned about the top speed (actually hardly any point being concerned about top speed in Sri Lanka for any car)

edit: Pradfred beat me to it, and said it much better as well :)

Unless they are the 300E, 300E 24V or the 500E not to mention the later E280 & E320 (all Petrol) :)

I point this out mainly because there are a few big engined petrol W124s in SL. Have come across an E280, a E320 and a 300E.

who said anything about converting from petrol to diesel?? i said it would be cheaper to buy a E200(diesel) and swap the engine with E250's or E300's, and driving a petrol version of such a big car would be too costly, not only that the engines will be also quite old so the fuel consumption will be even higher

actually y i was bothered about the top speed was, at first i thought they all have the same top speed (220Km/h) but then when i went through Wikipedia they had different ones,

yeah there's no point worrying about the top speed in Sri Lanka! LOL

so what about the performance of these cars? acceleration? and do these cars have trouble going up a hill?? remember i'm talking about the diesel versions

Magnum we're going around in a bit of a circle here. I think Miniace has already commented that he felt the 200D felt a bit underpowered bu t I think the power is adequate for daily running. I have seen 200Ds on motorways doing 70MPH so it's not really an issue in reality, unless you harbour secret thoughts of drag racing. The torque should be more than adequate to go up hills, though as you can understand the more torque, BHP you have the more you can do with it.

Gives you enough links talking about acceleration of these cars. Remember Merc owners in SL don't normally keep track of such figures, nor do they usually care about top speed.

Why don't you go see a few of these cars and try them out for yourself, and you might find some of the answers you need that way.

If you're going to buy a W124, buy it for the right reasons :).

Of course :) Even the W201 came with a Cosworth engine option. But generally speaking most Merc owners buy these cars for luxury not for speed.
