guys is there a place you know which can remake a smart key..because currently the vehicle only has one original key left. if that key lost, it will be a big issue to start the vehicle. The key emits code signals which are recognized by the car and appropriately responded and can only started. so it cannot start from any other key(cutted key). need help!!!

The agents definitely do it and so does a few other places. Check the Sunday news papers. I think the last time this topic came out, the consensus was to go to the agents since you didn't want to trust anybody else with the keys to your car.

There could be key programmers. But i don't think there are smart key programmers out there. If they mess things up, you can't even use your original key.... Best thin is go to the agents.... Car need a key programmer to program keys....

It will be possible with the agents.I know definitely Toyota lanka is doing it for Toyota vehicles,I have no idea about the other brands.they may also probably do it.I think the smart key you can purchase even from the web sites like ebay and then take it to the agents to programme it. you better first get the advise from your agents before purchasing your key.

appreciate the ideas guys..yes its a better idea check it out with agents even it cost more..since its a toyota..going to check with toyota lanka!!

If you buy it from the agents it'll cost you more than 25k, and for programming another 4k. Better to buy from somewhere else and take it to the agents for programming.

Where can I get a smart key copy cut just to open the door manually?

Point is;if I lock the car with keys in,I can use the cut key and open the door.Somebody told me a laser key cut place is there at MC. Anybody knows about it?

Last week ##### carried an AD for smart keys. They says they do the programming as well. A laser key can be cut at Mr.Mint at MC, But you cannot start with that key but only open the door. You need to get it programmed by Toyota Lanka.

Dude, you can't lock the car with the smart key inside. That's why it's called a smart key. :D

Personally I never understood this push start craze...of what use is it? Isn't it just another thing to worry about with your car which gives you absolutely nothing? Anyway, if its a Toyota, the agents'll charge you 30k (for what would've cost you Rs.250 at Mister Mint if you got the one with a key).

OK ,YOU can't lock the car with a smart key in,but isn't there any stupid possibity at all to happen that?

What if you have a faulty door lock and can't that make the smart key dumb?

Vehicles with smart keys have sensors on all doors and in the dickey door to detect the smart key. If you leave the key inside and try to press the button on the door it won't lock and in most cars will give a warning alarm. Say if the battery of the smart key is dead or some problem obviosly it'll not lock. This is called fail safe.

And if your door lock is jammed machanically still the other door locks will function as normal so you can get in to the car anyway.

Well it can happen if you are in an area with a radio frequency jammer as is the case with some parts of Colombo. This is why the smart key has an actual normal key embedded. But when you are using a smart key normally you will use it to lock the car wouldn't you ? Remember you can't start the car with a key any more without a smart key so I'm not sure the actual value of having a normal key on the side.

Best is to have another smart key as a spare....

I agree with you on this. Aint so smart if it locks itself inside :D

From what I know, most cars that have smartkeys still have the metal-key hole on the door, even the S-class. So I think it'd make more sense to have a copy of the metal key than the smart key.

But I have seen cars that dont have the metal-key hole. And I asked this before as well, when someone was talking/asking about a scenario where the battery died and the smart-key sensor was no longer working, but i guess it went unanswered. Which brings me back to the question, you leave your only-smark-key car in the garage for months without use and you come back and the battery's totally drained out, how do you get into the car even to merely pop the hood to change the battery?

Neither did I. Dunno whats so hard about inserting a metal blade into a slot and turning it. I'd like to have such an important part of the car mechanical and reliable, thank you very much.

well, I think the system was more to do with the idea that you never have to take the key's out of your pocket/purse - to lock/unlock the car or to start the engine. Wouldn't make much sense to have smart keys for the door, and then still fish it out to start the car.

however, on the reliability angle, I found this post on a forum (almost a year old now):

I am here in Sri Lanka. In few places in this island the smart key seems not working.I had to push my toyota for 2 kilometres to have my car started. They say that they have fixed some satellite jammers around the city as a security concern. could that be a truth? any one have experienced the same problem?

Yeah. But what's so hard about that? :D The way I see it, these new devices just have more propensity to fail compared to 'normal' keys.

And damn, I'd hate to have to push my car around to find a place just to get it started.

well, same argument could be said for stuff like auto-headlights - what's so hard to turn it on when it gets too dark? ditto auto-wipers, memory seats, etc.

For some things, e.g. auto headlights, could argue that they are safer, because they take user error (forgot to turn on lights) out of the equation.

OTOH it's just more things that can go wrong with the car.

Anyway, men tend not to have too many things in their pockets so finding keys is not a challenge; but sheesh, the number of times I've seen my wife scrounging around in her handbag to find the keys..

End of the day, car makers have to show some "features" to convince people to upgrade their rides ;)

Ditto with the auto headlight/wipers thing. But memory seats can be helpful - say if many people drive one car. I personally hate it when my seat is adjusted.

Yeah, I agree about the marketing aspect of it.

I'd hate to see the day when cars drive themselves. Hell, I'd rather take the bus. :D

It was never about making things easier. It was more about security. So the engine start process is now different to the engine activation process and it's much harder to jump start your car or duplicate a key.

Also somebody said something about still having a metal key hole in the doors, so having a duplicate metal key is a good idea. But what exactly are you going to do with that metal key ? All you can do is retrieve whatever is inside or lock the car. You can't start or use the car without a programmed smart key. And as somebody pointed out apart from areas where there are radio frequency jammers its virtually impossible to lock the car with the keys in.

i read somewhere that smart keys were originally designed as a safety feature so that women wouldn't get mugged in car parks when they were groping around looking for their keys. got to admit, it always happens in the movies!

check this out

there r so many more

What is so smart in the so called smart key if a person with some type of a transmitting device who is not from manufacturer or its agent can open the car without leaving any trace that it was open.

If its a metal key you find some physical damage in most of the cases if someone opens the car and also there is a higher chance someone might able to notice the incident since you have to struggle a bit to break in.

How nice it will be to find a fire arm or something like that in your car when you go home after work.
