Question

Posted (edited)

Hi All

Recently I changed all 4 shocks in my Maruti 800 and it increased comfort level. Can I get an advise on upgrading tire size. Currently having 145/70 R12. What would happen if i use 155/80 R12. Will it scrape the tire.

Please advise me.

please use the search function first - that little box at the top right, try searching for "upsizing" and "tyre size" and "tyre wheel arch". (make sure the search space is "Forums" (not "This Topic" or "This Forum"). pros and cons have been discussed quite extensively.)

generally speaking though, the manufacturer recommended that size for a reason, and unless you are changing your rim size (then you of course need different tyre specs) you should stay with the spec size.

155/70R12 will be fine.155/80R12 is too big.

I have heard and not really sure that increasing the profile is not really practical on Marutis especially when under full loads and driving over pot holes.Try to increase the ride height a bit to avoid wheel arch contacts and see.

It'll look rather weird though. Small cars with large profile tyres always look weird. The best thing is to just drive a bit carefully, avoiding the potholes. :) And besides, the 800's handling isn't that great as it is, larger tyres might mess things up.

Don't go for it bro. It will spoil the handling (*Cornering) and also will rub against the mudguard when the the car is loaded. The Steering also might feel heavier

Mate..automobile production companies make a product and let it out in the market after making a various testings. It's always advisable to use what is standard and recommend to your vehicle..changing the wheel size may cause you unexpected problems as it would lose the handling, fuel efficiency. When the wheel size is bigger it's bit odd looking for a Maruti and when you make the turns you will feel bit of a out of control i suppose..

If you do so you will have to put tyres with lower profile to compensate the increase in wheel size. In the end the wheel size with the tyre needs to remain the same else things like the speedometer reading will be wrong and the wheels might hit against the arches.

With the lower profile tyre comfort will reduce as there is less air in the tyre to absorb impact and fuel efficiency might suffer a little as well.

I'm reposting the link given by jerryda which you can use to determine the correct tyre you would have to use should you upgrade to 14"

The rims have been changed from 13 to 14 in my car as well and I have 15" rims that I've had for a while but not fitted on because the car is used by my father more than me (as I'm away for most of the year) and I don't think he will appreciate a bone rattling ride. The ride quality is OK even with 14" rims but that is because my tyres are 160/80 R14 so there is quite a bit of air in the tyres still. So do the math and see if it works for you.

When you start looking at profile 60 and bellow the ride comfort does get affected though you might get better handling and cornering ability. So really the key is what is most important to you and what kind of roads do you normally ride in.
