Hi there,

I 'll be going on a lil' visit to singapore soon,

Just wanted to ask if anyone knew good places to get hold of car accessories, automotive gear etc.. I'm sure there must be plenty

Just want to know the best places.. Hoping to get few gauges, HID lights etc, for personal use

Can anyone help me out on this?

Thanks

my advice, better you shop them in malaysia dude, in KL,

you got the same stuff there, but a bit cheaper as well.

if its electronics, then try sim lim sqaure!you'll find almost everything, there are a few adjoining complexes near sim lim where they sell car accessories too!

or try funan centre where you find high quality stuff for abit more of a price tag!

try getting all stuff at the same place, you'll get it for a much lesser price!they do encourage people who buys alot of stuff, they might even throw in a few stuff for free if you got for alot!

a month ago,by bargaining and buying it from the same place i got ~600$ worth car audio equipment for 450$

SO DONT FORGET TO BARGAIN!if they say fifty, ask for forty, and you'll end up somewhere near forty five!

Frankly car parts here arent THAT cheap. Was looking for some parts (for a jap vehicle) to send to SL myself, but prices are more or less the same, if not bit more here (that is if its available in SL)... Parts for rarer vehicles might be a bit lesser (i remember someone saying he had a contact that had cheap BMW parts)... but in general for car parts, I say forget it not worth the bargain and the baggage allowance wasted on heavy metal stuff.

Bargaining may help, but it helps more to be educated. So if you goto simlim with no idea of what you want, you WILL be conned. Example the item you bargained from 600 to 450 might actually be worth only 350. Yes, they do that here. I once went in and asked for a digi-cam battery out of curiosity. Initial quote was $80, but as i about to walk away, the guy brought his price down to $32 for cash n carry. Frankly I wasnt loking to buy that day. But had i been, i was willing to spend upto around $50 (before i did my research); and had he hit 50 on his way down from 80 i would have bought it then n there. But me walking away brought the price so far down. Same goes for a lot of other such items.

People come to singapore looking for super bargains, but frankly there's nothing of that sort. The $50 discount he gives you on something he'll catch up by selling you an accessory that's priced $50 more. If you dont want to buy all this overpriced add-ons he will spontaneously realize he no longer has stock of what you want.

Another trick is to offer you something 'better'. Example, you wanna buy camera X which is worth about 400 bucks. You had done your research on X and know that 400 is the best price. Then as you're about to close the deal he'll go 'but why dont you try Y? its better and cheaper.. only 350...' As this is less than what you were initially willing to pay you go for it thinking you saved 50 bucks, but in reality Y might be worth only 300, and your lack of knowledge on Y let you be conned.

The difference between most shops in funan and simlim is that most funan salesmen tell you the actual price upfront whereas in simlim they'll tell you a really good price (or a big price and then let u bargain down letting u think you won) just so that you come into the shop. Which is why at face value funan's more expensive. But as a norm i generally stick to funan, or really research the product/price before buying in simlim.

Frankly these shops also buy it at a cost and they have their own expenses and profits, so dont go expect them to give you stuff at dirt cheap. Basically know what you;'re looking for and then go shopping. Don't be conned into bargains or free gifts. And the strong SGD against the LKR doesn't help either.

Is there anything particular you're looking for? Maybe I can help.

Do you have any idea how much a set of HIDs would cost there? (6000-8000K H4)

and a boost gauge, just to get an idea..

If you decide to buy something don't forget to ask for the tax refund forms. You can actually get a VAT refund on the purchases you made when you leave singapore.

Around where in KL?

actually, from where we can buy motor parts from Malaysia. Thailand there is a big street and big supermarkets for motor parts. but i couldn't find proper place to buy motor partz from Malaysia. if any one know good place please tell.

Does anyone know of an area where there are car accessory shops in KL? specially one that has got parts for BMWs

For BMW Spares in KL;

1) Bavarian Auto

28 Jalan Segambut

Orginal and OEM only

2) Munich Auto

20 Jalan Segambut

Non genuine parts. Quite cheap though, if that's your cup of tea.

3) First Division auto

Jln Ipoh

All these shops are very close to each other. First two are almost next to each other.

I could not find a place for BMW accessories. But there is a shop which had some body kits and lighting near First Division auto.

hope this helps

Remember that bugger who was trying to sell me that wide angle adapter? Walking away made him say "I will give you for free"

That is only in the fairly big shops and only on invoices over some amount, think it was $100 or so. Don't think you can get it from places where you can bargain. I remember buying a pair of shoes I didn't need coz I wanted to buy a basketball that wouldn't have qualified. But they are good shoes, serving me well to this day, so no regrets :)

I just asked the price of nexus S (wasnt gonna buy anyway) in a shop in Sim Lim Sq. Initial quote was $680. I said thanks and turned. He asked whether i want discount. I said how much. He took the calculator out and said "for my SLn (I told that) friend ill give 630$.

but when I checked another shop it was above $800 so I don't know exactly.

There was a shop in serangoon race course road selling electronics. the phones were more than 15-20% cheaper than in Mustafa but you don't get the GST refund. I preferred Mustafa and it was still much cheaper than in SL.

The shops which offer GST refund I think require purchases above 100$ and they will take a cut (in Mustafa it was 5$) as their cost. You need to fill in a form adn give your passport. 5 min job and you'll get a form and a carbon copy. At the Changi Airport you have to declare that to the Customs GST counter before check in nd get the form authorised. Then post the original and keep your copy. You will get the refund via check, draft or even Credit card.

(The GST is 7% and the effective is something more than 6%)

No. You have to produce the invoices and the form to a special desk at the airport. I think you have more information on the above post. :)

bought quite a lot of electronics from there. They DO send a lot of mail, but I can't really call it spam. Its unwelcome, but I did opt in.

Also, it is worth it to claim. a 7% discount on S$100 is about Rs 600. Depending on how much you spend, it can be significant.

One mistake I will never repeat is to go back to Mustafas. Worst service ever. Bunch of bored Indians who can't be bothered with their customers. They can go rot in hell.
