Emission Control Unit

Today I just remove one of my car's dashboard panel for fixing malfunctioning dashboard bulb, while in the process I noticed some kind of electronic unit named as Emission Control Unit.

It was labeled as "Emission Control Unit, Toyota 2C A/T; Denso".

My car is Corolla CE110 Diesel, 1997 Oct,Face-lifted, Automatic, Engine 2C.

I think this car equipped with mechanical type injector pump, what does this Emission Control Unit really do to reduce emission?

Even it looks like a mechanical type injector pump it has an electronic control to reduce the emissions. Mostly an electronic governor and a electronically controlled valve to limit the fuel flow. And that unit you found is to analyse and control the system.
