ravindu996
HI GUYS QUESTION 1: i live in the uk and me and my parents are planing to move to sri lanka in the coming months. we have two cars at the moment my dads car which is a cheverolet camaro 2010 and our family car which is a chrysler 300c 2008. so our initial plan was to sell the cars (they are currently on sale) and buy a new car in SL but me and my dad both dont want to leave them behind.. we know that the tax and duty rates in sri lanka a ridiculous in sri lanka and these cars will be taxed heavily.. so my question to you guys is.. is there anyway around the customs system in SL since these cars are our own cars??? QUESTION 2: I was planing to start my own car business (importing) in sri lanka.. any suggestions or advice from someone with experience in the industry??? P.S. i have included several recent images of the cars in the attachment they were taken a week ago when the cars were put up for sale
thadiya
Refer to your pic with the interior of the Chevy, you might have to convert it to RHD before/after importing to Sri Lanka, AFAIK. http://www.motortraffic.gov.lk/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=89&Itemid=119〈=en

Watchman
You need to do a LOT of research before you even think about starting a car-sale business. And you're not the first guy who realized cars are cheap in the UK and can be imported. There's nothing called easy or fast money. You're gonna have to dump in a whole lotta cash before even thinking of profits.
VVTi
Its a saturated market with every monkey and his uncle who has a relative/freind in the UK bringing down cars for cheap now. If you are going to bring the cars concerned for personal use, then that's another matter. But then that Camaro will need to get converted. That will cost money. Unless it will be cheaper to do that there and ship out. Either way you are looking at parting with serious dosh. Best option is for you to sell those two and bring the cash down and buy from here. The choices are getting better in SL. Its not as if the 300C is a rarity here. The Camaro, yes. But not the 300C. About starting a car sale, well, like Watchman said, unless you have money to sink in initially, your returns will be very limited as tehre are far too many players who do this with very small markups. And I think most of them have used up all the excuses with the Customs... Even the Carnet permits are being investigated now since, as usual our buggers pushed the envelope a bit too far and over did everything. ravindu996
@VVTi...yeah so if not a car sale.. how about a car rental.. with like proper luxury cars with a one off importation.. would that make a good profit?? hmm yh im guessing we will have to sell the camaro and 300c since its not practical paying lots of money on taxes.. i dont mind getting rid of the camaro man it drinks petrol as if its water but the end result is worth it.. (speeed) I admire your tenacity... The luxury rental market has been dealt with, as Peri said. To be very honest and rather up front, all your plans are rather dated when it comes to the SL car market. You are not coming up with anything new to break into the car market here machang. Mommy and Daddy will have to do without the 300C and the Chevy when they come to SL... Poor sonny will have to jump a few tuk tuks. I can suggest a way of bringing the cars though, Take plenty of pics and frame them.

I DID NOT LIKE IT!!!!! We don't see how rich your dad is or care how he made his money. Look before you start making monkey by hook or by crook, you have to live a little. You are off to a bad start if at 16 you are planning on bribing government officials... these things will not end well... Especially to a young buck from UK who has no clue how things work here. At 16, you should be watching porn, getting laid, smoking pot, hanging out with the guys and getting yourself in to trouble that you may walk away from with nothing worse than a slap on the wrist.... Importing cars to SL under the radar or even looking at the possibility is asking to get a bullet in the head, a knife in the ribs or worse. Like i Said, get laid more often. Shag a few girls, or boys or whatever it is that turns your starter motor. Take this as friendly advise as you are just about to start making a real arse of yourself here.
