Hi,

Can someone tell me about the " Peugeot 406 D9 ". How it's performances and the usage.

I love this car. But no much confident enough to buy one.

Price is going above 1.6 Mln for those manufactured in 2000-2002 with milage 75-100,000 km .

I know that the parts are more expensive than Japanese cars. So, like to know the pros and cons..

Though I did not own 406 D9, in simply; it is good reliable car.

Bimsara, you might notice on the top right had side the forum has a search function, and you will be able to find lots of useful information by typing in peugeot 406. This subject has been covered a few times over already and there is lots of good information there.

At a high level all I can say is avoid the automatic as it seems to be the biggest source of pain (the AL4 auto apparently has a manufacturing defect which can be corrected but can cost a bit of money) as well as electronic niggles. Try to buy a brand new imported manual one with service history.

Also if you are thinking about getting a car for cheap and running it without care this is probably not the car for you. The 406 is quite hardy but it needs to be maintained by somebody who understands European cars and have got the proper equipment. People messing around them without knowing what they are doing is the biggest reason why some of them are not in good shape anymore.

There is lots of good information out in the web as well, research the car before you come to a conclusion.

Probably because its not Asian The priorities of the Sri Lankan buyer is different from priorities of a European buyer.

You might want to consider the turning radius of D9.I think It's larger than that of general toyota & nissan cars.

I went through many threads in auto lanka and on the web before considering to buy a peugeot 406.

I recently got a 406 and I love the car. Only diffiiculty that I am facing is turing in tight corners. Its a large car and it has a big turing circle.

I drive a toyota vitz and I have had a nissan bluebird. They both have pretty tight turning circles.

But handling & driving experience is off the chart in comparison to vitz/bluebird.

Peugeot 406 - Turning Circle: 11.45m

Toyota Vitz - Turning circle 9.4 m

Nissan Bluebird FG10 Turning circle 10 m

Harshan Can you advice me on a good garage for repairs. Initially I'm thinking of doing the main repairs at carmart.

Tight turning circle in a 406 would be the last thing I would look for as they aren't compact city cars.

As for maintenance of Peugeots, I would recommend none but Aruna at Throve automobile you can contact him on 777 677 677 or 773 841 315

Hi All,

Peugeot 406 has been a car I like but I never bought one do far. I had Honda, Toyata and Nissan cars so far and this time I am going to buy a 406 for sure. I have already done some research and only remaining question question is selecting between 1.8L and 2.0L. I will buy a car with a Manual Gear box.

Could some one please advice me on performance, fuel consumption and maintenance of these 2 engines.

Most of my commutes will be outside Colombo and varies from 15Km to 100Km. More than 70% of time, I drive between 40Kmph and 80Kmph and this is because most of my routes are traffic free. I usually do about 1500Km per month.

there's a give and take or pros and cons between 2.0l and 1.8l engines. Even in 1.8l engine, there are 3 variants. The most reliable one out of three is the L6A engine which was there in most of early brand new imports through agents. 1.8l isn't really economical as it makes the car under powered.

Later the 2.0l engine appeared (EW10) and not as solid as L6A but has more power (obviously) and smooth operation lower noise levels due to hydraulic assisted valve buckets.

all in all, you can go for a 2.0l executive with manual gears and all bells and whistles. Search the forum for more comprehensive answers about various peugeot 406 trim levels. There's a post 2002 406 with com2000 module and often referred in the car market as 'com' model. This comes with auto wipers and auto lights along with a 2.0l engine. I'm sure you'll be better off with one than an executive with all unnecessary features and of course imported from UK in contrary to brandnew imports.

Finally I bought a Peugeot 406 few days before. It is a 2.0 liter-Manual- Executive, YOM 1999, imported from UK and registered here in 2002. Car is in good shape but there are some front and rear suspension issues to fix and probably need an engine tune up. There is also a slight oil leak from a packing and few other minor things to fix. Will have to spend a bit to get everything the way I want them to be.

Handling is great and road holding seems to be good. Feel like very solid and stable on bumpy roads but pit holes on the road are felt than I expect.

Few guys mentioned that this does about 8KMPL in Colombo which appears to be correct. Below are my observations with regard to Fuel consumption. ( @ Type preassure 32 psi and... of course with AC on. Maintained RPM around 1500 and 2000 most of the time and speed was between 60 and 80).

1. With the traffic in colombo during school time (about 7 Km within about 45 mins)

** 4 Kilometers per Liter

2. On roads arond Gampaha

** 11 to 12 Kilometers per Liter

3. Avoiding traffic ( Starting at 4.45am today, 2 hours drive of about 100Km on Dambulla-Kurunagala road and Kuunagala Negombo Road. Speed between 60Kmph - 80Kmph )

** 15.5 Kilometers per liter.

Above figures shows that, this is car is not as bad as people say with regard to Fuel consumption. Most of Japanese sedans does about 8 KMPL in Colombo and about 12KMPL out of Colombo. I wish it had the maintenance cost of a Japanese car too ......

are these your calculations or figures displayed on the onboard computer?

All these are figures displayed on the onboard computer. I did reset the counters before each of above travels. I believe that the computer is accurate but have no proof in hand to prove the accuracy of the computer. With the next full tank, I will verify the computer calculation against actual and will let you know the results.

However, 15.5 figure above was obtained by driving with extra attention on fuel efficiency. I have noted that, with 2.0L 406, RPMs above 2000 makes a clear difference in fuel consumption. So I never REV beyond 2000 unless there is a purpose like overtaking. On the other hand, I never hesitate to REV beyond even 4000 - 5000 if I need to quickly overtake a vehicle.

I sold my  2.0L 406 Executive few months before. It was a good car.... as we all know maintenance cost was high but I never had an issue in finding brand new\used spare parts. It did 10 to 11 kmpl in average. This because most of my commutes are away from Colombo and city limits.

Few days before, I bought another 406. This time it is an auto gear car.... yes... it is AL4 gear box. The gearbox already had issues so the owner himself offered me a reasonable price to compensate that. Gearbox is being repaired at the moment and I should be able to ride the car in a few days. It is a full rebuild of the gearbox. Estimated cost is about Rs 150,000. Yes it is high..... but I believe it is a good deal if it runs without issues for at least 4-5 years. If someone is interested, I can provide more details of the place and I can share more information. They seems very professional and said it will take about 4 working days to complete the job. 

Ultimately it is a Peugeot 406.........

This was a "GU-XXXX" numbered Silver one right?  I had a few drives in it too, yesteday also went in it  ... good car, however the Side A/C panel is melted right? what happened there? sun exposure?
