Import/pre-Registration Runing

Hi Guys,

Once a vehicle is imported and cleared from the harbour gate, is there a temoporary period the vehicle can be used on our roads till the registration is done? I've seen a few vehicles with foreign number plates (specially UK plates) running on our roads. Also new vehicles with Chasis/Engine number boards on them. Not sure about the law behind this.

One of my friends is planning to clear his car next week and have a concern on what the cops might raise when he drives it home all the way to Kandy.

Any help is appreciated.

unless your father is a police officer, a powerful government officer/politician you cant run without a valid registration number........... and police people will take you to the courts, if you do so....

but for professional importers they have a garage number given by the RMV, so they are allowed to go for some limited distances, while maintaining a "log"...............

You are correct, There were two types of number plates early that is: Garage plate for Repair garages, Trade plate for Dealers.

My late father and I had both during the time I was a importer( Trade Plate)and automobile repair man (Garage Plate) for testing of automobiles after repair.

I think there is only one type at present Trade plates, which are issued to dealers they can run only from the ( Import)clearing point to their sales show room or to their delivery inspection station, they can use same for a demonstration for a prospective buyer. No passengers or goods are allowed to to be carried when it is on the road. With Valid comprehensive Insurance and trade plate license. To get this trade plate you have to oil palm of relevant officers.

There is a special form issued by RMV, you have to give all details of the driver and the reason for what the vehicle is driven on the road time destination route Etc Etc.

Today all above are miss used. As you mentioned if you have top connections you can do all jugglery in this country and get out of the rules and regulations of this country.

The Police officer who takes your license some times have to return same to your door step if top orders are given.
