Problem With Air Filter In Fb 14

Malkoba

Question

Hi guys,

I have a 1997 FB 14 diesel, for which I had to replace the engine few months back. about 2 days ago, while cleaning, I have noticed that there is oil in the air filter. As per my knowledge there SHOULD NOT be anything other than dust in the filter.(please correct me if I'm wrong. I know very little about engines :) )

What can be the issue. I'm thinking of going to the A*W peliyagoda center to have this checked.

Thanks.

Hi Malkoba, the engine has a breathing mechanism which is sometimes connected to the air filter via a rubber pipe. Sometimes a bit of oil gets into the filter enclosure via this so it could be normal. Have you changed oil recently? When you check your oil level can you see a reduction in oil levels? If you are a bit worried do have it checked out but it is possible there isn't anything to be worried about!

'Malkoba',

As for my knowledge when the engine is under compression this happens

Normal air filters do not have oil, get the engine compression checked by the agents.

I do not know do they check the compression, because it is done totally different to Petrol engine.

if any assistance is necessary you post to the forum. where is your location.

Sylvi, if this car had a carburettor engine then I would have also suspected that it could be because oil was seeping through to the throttle body and via that to the air filter compartment which is mounted on top of the throttle body in this car. But since it's EFI I don't think this is really possible..... could somebody correct me if I'm wrong please?

Thanks for the replies sylvi & Don,

Have you changed oil recently

No, I have completed about 4.5k km after the last oil change. I have to change again in 2-3 weeks.

When you check your oil level can you see a reduction in oil levels

Yes. But very little. I also have a tiny leak from the top of the engine.

if any assistance is necessary you post to the forum. where is your location.

I'm a daily traveler to Colombo, so it won't be hard to check with the agents.

So, the conclusion is to check with the agents for compression???

Thanks,

Geeshan.

Take it to a normal mechanic first. Can you check if the oil level is correct or if there is too much oil in the engine. Do this first thing in the morning after the car has been parked overnight. I wonder if the car was overfilled with oil the last time oil was added in. Also clean the oil in the air filter with a tissue and then check if there is more oil there after a couple of days running.
