Hi all, I'm not sure if any of you guys saw the ad on last sunday's H***d on page 121. It's an ad by a very popular car A/V specialist. He has actually advertised the fact that they undertake odometer mileage adjustment. It says I quote "convert your vehicle to low mileage". Is this even legal?

I know this happens a lot but his cheek to advertise this on a popular news paper seems unacceptable.

Saw it -- but i dont think its illegal to reduce the mileage or even advertise.[its cheeky - no doubt :) ]

From what I heard from an importer, even the Jaai cert is forged/re-produced in S.L.

And -according to him- apart from the vehicles which had met with accidents, all other Jaai certs are false, as the meter is altered in every vehicle!

I'll leave it to the experts here to verify this.

Saw it too. But its not a suprise to me, cuz i know by experience that they do anything to earn(rip) money from customers.

Members,

AS i have told early in my posts this is going on for more than 10 years in Srilanka.

This practice is purely cheating by the used car sellers.

Today one meter adjuster is a big time importer of motor vehicles having made money by adjusting meters.

They want to impress buyers the vehicle had done only few KMs by that the buyers get a impression that they get a good vehicle.

AS Mirage 7777 post says(From what I heard from an importer, even the Jaai cert is forged/re-produced in S.L)IT is 100% true.

Importers registered twice some vehicles getting two sets of papers during 1980s.

First 1000.00 Rupee note was printed by one of our Srilankan in Japan few decades ago.

Srilankans in Japan thought all crooked things to do for automobiles to Japanese exporters in early 1980s.

Stamping new chassis numbers for old vehicles which are exported to other countries. So that it is very difficult to detect by our authorities.

Some importers lived on insurance claims with the help of our appraisers in Srilanka making false claims.Which Japanese Insurance companies paid.

Thereby they get double profit from selling the vehicle and Shipping Insurance claim.

For the average person who judges the condition of a vehicle from a set of magical numbers this could be a problem, but for the smart buyer who actually gets a full inspection of the car done by a professional this whole odometer resetting business shouldn't be much of an issue.

Saw it. but didnt care abt is much because now days this is a very populer thing. whatever happen to this no's dont bother. just try to go through all the service records & come to a decision. it's hard to trust on odo meter readings now.

Like The Stig mentioned somebody does have a bit of a common sense can really identify it is aleted or not by considering ownwer, registered year & month and some good inspection.

Hmm must go to the guy, my Hilux had a period where the speedo sensor burn out (Yes, it has a sensor) and due to lack of a replacement part it ran that way for over a year before I got the part. So its true mileage is about 30k higher than the current reading...

I'd love to see their faces when I ask for the mileage to be INCREASED!

Supra, if I'm not mistaken an Hilux of the vintage you have has an analogue meter doesn't it? I have a feeling these chaps are talking about altering digital meters. It was supposed to make altering difficult but it seems to have made it easier!

Yes Don it has an analogue meter... I didnt actually think of that. Must check up and see if it can be done anyway.

The thing with digital odos is that pretty muchany tosspot with a laptopcan now to figure out how to adjust them, doubt the manufacturers bargained for that when they first thought up the idea ages ago!

Well I think they tried to make it so that only dealers with authorised equipment will be able to adjust them. It is probably scrambled in most cars and in some European cars its stored in multiple locations to make tampering more difficult. But once you break the code it becomes a fairly easy process and when there is a challenge there is always seem to be a hacker up for the challenge!

'The Don',

There are few meter adjusters in srilanka they do it with the help of a Laptop.

Some are capable of doing any vehicles made till 2011 end,

So that the manufacturer even log into the motor vehicle electronics system vehicle past record it is all erased to give a new reading.

All stored in multiple locations can be erased now days.

You are quite correct. (when there is a challenge there is always seem to be a hacker up for the challenge!)

We srilankans are genius in forging any thing under this world when it comes to technology. First was the CTB bus ticket machine in early 1980s

In this case we are experts at borrowing any technology to get around the rules :) Sri Lankan hackers didn't come up with the technology, we just are experts at finding it when people do. "Hora wada walata dakshai"

'CyRaX',

Person who had advertised this car must be one of the odometer adjusters.

Sylvi Wijesinghe.

Most probably ...

If their open advertising become successful , they may develop an association called "Association of Odometer Adjusters": AOA" :D

Not necessarily. They would've bought down uk imports which are relatively cheap compared to Japanese auction prices. Issue is uk vehicles are with high milieage unlike jap vehicles where masses use public transportation for distance traveling.

They might be paying 500 bucks to odo adjuster and say 'odo will be adjusted FOC'

'harshansenadhir',

I don't think odometer adjuster will adjust a meter for 500/= Rupees.
