Hi all,

I'm 17 years old and I thought of getting driving license. According to this http://www.motortraffic.gov.lk/web/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=83&Itemid=140〈=en page they said that If I am 17 years old I can face for the written test and obtain the learners' permit up to 18 months. Is this practical? I mean can I follow this procedure? And from learners permit and L-board can I drive here and there by our Townace van? I am asking this because I am not sure Sri Lankan government websites. They are not up to date. :D

Yes you can drive after you get the learners permit but you are not allowed to drive alone, you should always have your L board on and there should be an adult with a drivers license alongside when you drive.

isnt it you should always have your L board on OR there should be an adult with a drivers license alongside when you drive.

Nope both criteria should be met, jeeez man think a little.

No offense mate i thought it was kind of obvious, if it is like that then every teenager would print a damn L board and stick it in their parents car and go show off to the girls in their tuition class or something.

I dont know how it was earlier (AFAIK the rule hasnt changed for sometime though) but now its like this.

@stig: I think the concern is more on being underaged... not on what he can or cannot drive...

Yep, if he is 17+ he can apply and write for the written test but the trial will be conducted once he is above 18 :)

Is learners permit issued upto 18 months? :o Anyway thanks for your replies :)

Maximum of 18 months i believe, not sure though but i think the minimum time is 3 months ?

Will have to check up on the minimum time, my cousin is doing his written test soon. Will let you know as soon as something pops up :)

Also your vehicle must be insured with Learner Insurance.
