Can I Import Damage Vehicals From Japan?

Funny way of justifying the actions of Mr VVTi....... This Praboda chap is no doubt an a*shole for thinking of doing something like this, but that does not mean his wife/GF or kids need to get insulted for his actions.

Huh? VVTi didn't say that she was fat and ugly for her husband's actions, in fact if we go with Will.I.Am on this, she probably got it from her mama. By your logic, when people insult you, I suppose you blame it on the actions of your wife!

Ok, let em create a scenario for all teh ladies whose panties are in a twist becasue of my 'abrasiveness'.

Ok, Tonto, let's just say that you are a first time car buyer. YOu know jack about the car you are buying. YOu go ask around and someone says' ah you know' I know a guy who brings cheap cars to SL, his name, for argument's sake here, is Praboda, or Paba for short. So you, Tonto, goes and takes out a loan, pawns your wife's jewllwery, borrow from a few close freinds and part with the cash for a flashy, unregsitered Axio. With me so far?

Ok, so 3 months down the road, after taking a few spins on Sri lankan roads, you take your baby, your beautiful wife and your mother for a trip to say, Galle on the newly opened E01. Fate has it that at 110Kmph you have a blow-out on your front right tire.

You lose control, you hit the center median, you spin once, the car that was behind you do not have time to slow down, slams in to your car at close 100Kmph.

Your car splits in to two, your mother and the baby seat contaiing your baby get thrown away as the seat belt anchors were never attached properly and is crushed by another car coming behind you. You and your wife are still strapped in but now the front end of the car careens off the highway, creating sparks that ignites the spilt fuel, hits a guard rail impaling both of you.

You dying throught due to massive internal hemmorage is and just before you are engulfed in flames; "HOW THE f**k DID THE CAR SPLIT IN TWO?"

You think a man who is trying to make a quick buck off a gullible car buyer will think twice about you or your families safety?

Did I get to you yet? Do you see what I am trying to say here?

Or will you still say how unfair it is that I insulted poor Paba and his wife?

Well said VVTI but i doubt tonto with his already bent chassis would understand all that

I'm sorry, did you just say me calling VVTi an abrasive unmentionable was a justification of his actions? Even after I said not excusing his actions?

I'm at a loss...

Guys, now I am no supporter of Mr. Fernando, and before the new certificate regime came into being a lot of crash damaged vehicles were imported to the country and some had suffered serious chassis damage.

But on the other side of the coin, and I am only talking about the UK here but might apply to other countries as well, that insurers have opted to pay out on crash damage vehicles rather than pay to have it fixed and then auction these vehicles out which are then bought by professional garrages, fixed up and put back into circulation. The damage is rated in a scale and in the UK only CAT D (light damage uneconomical repair) and CAT C (moderate damage requires vehicle identification check after repair) can legally be put back on the roads after repair.

And sometimes the vehicles have sustained fairly limited damage and the only reason why it was considered an uneconomical repair is an insurer will estimate the cost of brand new replacements while equivalent can be sought from a breakers yard for a lot less. And some people do this for a living and I think its an honest line of work and customers can find out if the car was a insurance write off by doing an Hpi check (but most traders disclose this information anyway and will even provide pics of the damage).

So as a business proposition I don't really see a problem with it though I can see how it can be abused quite badly. Just giving a bit of perspective.

I remember watchign a 5th gear or (old)top-gear episode on this...the segment was hosted by Quentin Willson.... i tried to look it us on YT, but couldnt find it. But then again a UK restoration and sri lankan restoration are 2 totally different ball game..

The local import johnnies will go to town if it's ever allowed. That's the biggest worry. Since 99% of these monkeys are in to unethical earning of money, they would not care what state the car will be.,

I fully understand what you say, and I don't have anything against u insulting the guy, but why drag the wife in to it ?, for all we know that wife of his may have already divorced him, so does it make any sense to insult the woman. Call me what u like, but its just not in me to ignore it .

Well said VVTI but i doubt tonto with his already bent chassis would understand all that

Putha... there is a reason you have that word " Chooti " in front, that's cos its the adjective for the size of your brain and god knows what else......

Now listen, the last time I had this discussion with your friend MD, the bugger accused me of trying to sell my car without disclosing the accident to another A/L member. I challenged him to prove it and to openly tell the name of the guy, up to now nothing. You want to believe what that guy says please go ahead...

Like I said earlier, I am quite open about the accident and I have a file full of details, measurements, pictures of before and after the repair, If the car is ever sold ( which I doubt ) all the details will be disclosed to the owner, and I don't do shit like trying to hide any faults. I am sure you are quite aware of the number of Sti s that have actually got condemned and still running.

Yes I remember that episode very well too! It was old Top Gear when Quentin Wilson was in it and the car was an old Mercedes Benz and he made a good saving. The situation has changed a little since then, and I wont bore you with why its come about, but generally speaking before 3 years ago insurers would subject most minor accidents to repair and there were many garages registered with them to do this sort of work. You will drop the car off, collect a courtesy car and pick it up when it was ready. But now they generally tend to write the car off rather than attempt a repair and sell the car via auction or to specialist disposal companies (I assume this must be cheaper for them), which actually put quite a bit of these insurance repair garages out of business.

On the plus side you can pick these cars up for cheap, and if you have the skills turn a good profit if you know what you are doing. The issue is getting them repaired by somebody else is not economically viable as garage labour costs are quite high, so it's only good for professionals.

But you need to have a good understanding of the car to be able to spot the quality of the repair you can achieve. The good thing about Europe is you can practically buy any panel brand new for almost any new car from the manufacturer including things like front slam panels etc. So you can return a car to near new condition as long as the chassis is ok.

But very few models from Europe is attractive to the SL market so whether it is a good business proposition for Sri Lanka, I don't know.

And I take VVTI's point on it being abused by people, but lets be realistic, this is probably already happening at some level or the other. That is why I suggested if you are buying a UK sourced vehicle do an HPI check yourself to make sure its not an accident damaged vehicle. All you need is the UK registration number.

Don, you certainly have a point about how accident damage or insurance write-off vehicles have some useful life left in them and how they can be put back into use. This model works well in other country mainly due to the fact the buyer is disclosed bout the vehicles ugly past before the purchase either by the seller or that information is available in public domain. Placing the buyer in a position to make a well informed decision. It is this free flow of information that is missing in the local market and as some have already mentioned opens up the possibility of abusing the system.
