Dear friend's i don't know nothing about vehicle stuffs, can anybody help me out with this matter.

I smell petrol when my vehicle starts, it will go off very quickly. I have toyota townace petrol engine. I've checked the engine but no signs of petrol leaks at all.

Today I've check the air filter then I've noticed petrol smell comes from the air filter chamber.

Kindly advice me what i should do ?

Thank you

Hi Gavindu,

A few questions first:

1. What is the year of manufacture of the vehicle? This will tell us which model of the vehicle you have. If you know this, post it straight off.

2. Does this happen every time you start the vehicle or just in cold starts? (i.e.: when you start in the morning after an overnight stop or starting after engine becomes cold)

3. Does the van have an Engine RPM Meter? This should be next to your speedo. If you have one, what RPM does it show after starting and what does it show after the petrol smell goes away?

4. Did you notice an increase of fuel consumption recently?

IMO smell of petrol from the Air Filter Chamber should be fine as long as you need to bring your nose closer to the opening to smell it. The moment you remove the Air Filter if the room fills up with petrol smell that's quite an alarming but unlikely situation.

Petrol smell in exhaust gases means that your engine is running rich, meaning that it burns more fuel than it's supposed to. Engines running rich for a short time, with every start, usually means that the Fuel Injectors are not in an optimum condition. But this is only valid for an EFI engine.

Provide the details and I'm sure that you'll find a solution through this forum.

Cheers,

HI guys,

It is not normal to me because it wasn't there, i mean petrol smell.

It's 1998 Toyota Townace Van. (Auto - carburetor model)

2 Days back petrol smell was there, but i couldn't start the vehicle today, sorry it doesn't have a RPM meter.

Petrol consumption for me its normal, Like 8-10 km per liter.

I'm having a small doubt here, i didn't had time to take the vehicle to do an engine wash. Kind of dirt on the engine body.

Thank you guys...... I hope i could figure this petrol smell matter as soon.

Check the choke mechanism on the carb. The choke plate should be at the closed position at cold start and should open up bit by bit as the engine turns over.If that procedure is out of sync it can cause the smells you're describing....Having the air filter replaced/cleaned and a proper tune up should help too.

Thank you guys ..... I'm also hoping to do a engine tuneup

Thank you very much again and again ..........

does it smell after you've driven a bit hard?

anyway check the fuel tank and see. you can do this from inside the vehicle by unbolting a flap on the floorboard behind the drivers seat. check all the lines. mainly the return line. if it smells chances are one of the o rings on the lines is gone or if you've messed with it the pipe isn't sitting well on the outlet,
