SL Charted Institute of Logistics and transport have released a paper addressing and detailing narrow transit and break down lanes on the Southern Expressway and arguing for reduced initial speed limits and a phasing in of heavy vehicles over time.

A report and the full paper available from Lanka Business on Line http://www.lbo.lk/fullstory.php?nid=192121159

I would be (pleasantly) surprised if the 'expressway' average speed exceeds 75 kmph.

Many of our drivers would be willing to use the expressway but very few would know how to use it properly and maintain speed - or indeed make a quick decision based on circumstances.

One of my friend told me that even though E01 will open 27th, it will take at least one more month to let us use it (???). He told me that this was told by some minister on radio/TV.

Do you guys hear something like this? is it true?

Anyone know if this is true or not? Was planning on heading down to check out the airshow on the 3rd. And was hoping to do it as a day trip.

Machang, before you jump and put up links like this, check the authenenticity of the images. Google 'Drunks' and you will see many fo these pics on the net. It doesn't take a monkey with a laptop to splice them up and make up a juicy news item for the consumption of other monkeys. Looking at the comments of the article one can gauge the type of people who take pleasure in pissing up-wind. Or in Sinhala parlance, Udfa balagena kela gahanawa'

This highway is a milestone in this country's post war develeopment, regardless of how the monkeys at the top branches behave. Be proud of it instead of dragging it to the gutters and making a mockery of our own.

A keyboard and a net connection is a not licence to spread lies.

Point taken machan, any one can see the images of drunken men are not taken from srilanka. I just thought that there could be some truth behind this article. My mistake.

Shudder to think of what will happen when people start swerving at speed, or their worn out and under inflated tires burst at speed.

Amen to that!

Really? Two white men drunk on the side of the road and you thought there might be some truth in this article? Machang, people are drunk and sprawled all over the pavements in Sri Lanka on a daily basis. Its hardly newsworthy.

Think before you post next time.

guys, as an awareness amongst us at least, lets just give some tips to those who will be using this highway,

some main points,

Make sure your tyres are in good condition

Check your tyre pressures

Check your brakes/ brake oil (Very important)

ensure your car has enough engine oil and coolant

Make sure your alert and not sleepy (driving on highway without any kind of activities is very deceiving to your mind and you could find yourself dozing off)

A radio with some good music (might not seem important, but it is if your travelling alone)

Do add some other points people :)

Make sure your electrical system is working fine, including head lamps, hazzard lights, brake lights etc etc

Check your spare wheel, jack etc

If you have ABS, EBA etc make sure they are opperating correctly.

Carry a flash light if driving at night. Carry something to eat and drink.

Carry a mobile phone with a handsfree to call emergency services.
