What To Look For When Changing Tire Width/height

B2Spirit

Question

Hi,

I am currently running 225/40R19 Toyo Proxes C1S LRR Tires which came as a manufacturer option (Stock Tire 215/55R17).

I am thinking of moving to 245/40R19 to improve the ride quality as it will increase the height of the tire without having to change the wheels.

Thought about 225/45 as well but looks like its hard to find in R19 Size.

245 is well within (1.54% diff) the recommended 3% variance of the original diameter but are there are any other things that i need to check?

And what are the tire brands that i should look for ?

Thanks.

Don't you feel the ride is stiff on the 40 profile?

Yes the ride is stiff. that's why i wanted to change the width and get a height change.

Going to 45 profile is a too bigger change according to tire size calculator sites.

My Rim specs are 19 * 7.5J.

So i am not sure whether i can fit 245/40s which seems to be a readily available size as opposed to 225/40 & 235/40

The tyre manufacturer will have a size chart for a particular tyre. Search online for the specific tyre you're planning to buy. You will find the minimum and maximum width of the wheel the specific tyre in your preferred size can accommodate.

has anyone seen how the tire on Vezel Z Hybrid sits on the Rim ?

Rim is kind of nestled in within the tire.

Is that a new tire design ?

The overhang is designed to protect the rim from kerbing. Different tyre brands give different names to the feature.

thanks.

I don't have an idea about a brand to buy yet.

So i checked a general site (http://www.tyresizecalculator.com/tyre-wheel-calculators/tyre-size-for-rim-size-width-calculator)

According to that for 7.5 Width and 40 profile, ideal is 215 or 225 and the max i can go to is 235.

So there goes my 245 plan :sad-smiley-066:

Ok here is a real head scratcher that i stumbled upon while doing research on this subject.

This is toyo malaysia site specification sheet. (http://www.toyotires.com.my/tire/pattern/proxes-c1s)

And this is Toyo Japan site spec sheet (http://toyotires.jp/size/pxc1s.html)

The specs on both sites are for the same Proxes C1S Series tires. But at the same tire spec(245/40R19) the approved rim width range is different from each other. How can that be ? :speechless-smiley-004:

The load index and the speed rating seems to be different. One is a Y and the other is a W
