Need Help With My Peugeot 305 Gl

Hi guys,

This is my first post here and I'm from Gampaha. This will be long but to make this easily readable I will write in brief as much as possible.

I recently bought this 14 sri Peugeot 305 GL and it has some wierd symptoms

Very sluggish to start. You need to crank about 6 or more times to start. Starting but engine doesnt hold on and soon dies. Sometimes it catches up but when I shift to first gear engine stops. I feel like petrol is not delivered to engine. Thought it as fuel pump but tested fuel delivery hose to carb and fuel spurts were good. So I'm guessing something's wrong with the carb, may be the former owner has adjusted mixture screws and carb volume controls or the jets may have clogged.

Not sure how to reset these to good performing standards and I personally think installing a new japanese carburetor that goes with 1472cc engine capacity will be reliable.. Can someone name me good carbs for this engine? I dont like taking a risk running with the old carb..What you suggest should offer me the fuel economy pls.

..............................

I prefer eplacing the engine with a new Japanese one with Auto Transmission. Can someone suggest me a place to get this done? What will be the best petrol EFI engine for this? What might be the cost?

...........................

I also need to get a good paint job done as there are rust and decays in the boady. I talked to a friend in Malabe and he requests around 25 for tinkering and at car shine Negambo, for the paint they will charge around 170000. I think this is too much..Are there mobile painters who could come to your place and do the job? Please give me a way to contact them. Someone who does tinkering and painting together would be great,,

..............................

There in my car I have a gas system which I want to be removed.. If someone wants that system I can sell.

Does anyone have parts for Peugeot 305 GL? I need original side mirrors and AC system parts.

Please help..Thanks

congrats on your purchase and from the face of it and pictures, it looks like a good car.

i don't think you should transplant the engine and gearbox with something else and i doubt it'll justify the cost and the effort. Rather you can get this into good condition using original setup. It all takes to find a good competent mechanic who knows Peugeots of this generation.

There's a good mechanic in Piliyandala area, unfortunately I don't have any contacts or known garages in your area. Probably give him a call and try to understand what exactly the issues your car has. For spare parts, this post on forum won't help much, but if you happen to call around following places in Panchikawatta

name and contact detail of mechanic : Mr. Navarathne 716 899 882

Subasinghe motors 112 449 604

Dharshana motors 112 438 748

as for paint and tinkering, there are mobile tinkers and painters but their quality is a question. I've been there done that and learnt a bitter lesson. You won't regret if you get a quality job done from a decent garage.

Please don't see that I am going to discourage you.

From what you said I recommend not do any major repairs.

Sell it and buy a common Japanese one. Because

1. Engine transplant is rather complicated and costly job.

2. Tinkering, painting and repairs to A/C are also very costly.

3. You will end up with a huge repair bill that is few times of the market value of the car.

I think this is your first car and also understand your wish to repair it to perfect working condition. But remember sourcing spares for the European cars of that era is not an easy job.

I have similar experience with my first car as a teenager. Believe me I bought it for 5,000 spend another 20,000 and finally managed to sell that for 5,000.

Hi,

I also own a Peugeot 305 GL, I've had the same issues and also today I'm having a few issue with my carb, I think it's about time to clean it up.

I think, I'm not sure though, but from what you said there could be several issues that could quickly fix it, one maybe your coil and condenser need to be changed (A little Expensive, because you gotta buy the original parts or else the local ones die out fast and you got the same problem all over again), or maybe your distributor needs to be cleaned (Maybe there's Carbon built up in the electrodes in there, just a little clean up with a nice 220/240 grit sandpaper would do the job)

If it is after putting it into gear and then stepping on the pedal that causes the car to turn off then it's definitely gotta be one of the two above.
