Hi AutoLankans,

I've used Toyota engine oil 10w-30 in a recent vehicle service and the current ODO is around 100,000km.

After running 1000km after the service I noticed a vast engine oil burn, almost near the second dot in the oil meter reader. :speechless-smiley-004: :speechless-smiley-004: :speechless-smiley-004:

So I went to a near service station and they told that, don't use 10w-30 now it's near 100,000km, you have to use something like 15W-40.

And I've done the service from T---L--- Nawinna.

Is this the general case?.. Do I need to do a complete Oil change or Refill woth 10W-30?

Thanks.

1. Didn't you experienced this oil burn before servicing this time?

2. What are the oils used for previous services ?

3. Check your garage floor and underneath of the engine for any oil leaks.

If no leaks and oil burning issue is not a sudden case, then you may use 15W40 or above from next service onward. Viscosity index 50 (xxW50) preferred than 40.

But if this is a sudden issue which observed the first time of your car, then your approach should be different.

If this is not a sudden issue, you may refill with 10W30 and run up to next service. But if this is sudden issue, its worth to replace oil with xxW50 and observe the situation.

Is your car a Toyota Passo ? Then 1000 cc or 1300 cc??

Hi gayanath,

Thanks for the reply.

All my services done from T--- L--- Nawinna. So all the service I've used 10W-30 oil. There is no sign of a leak, Since I park my car tiled floor (white), if that is the case I would notice that.

This issue, I noticed suddenly and I've forgot to check oil level before the service, but After the service this much of oil burnt looks like a serious issue :(

Is it normal to shift from 10W-30 after doing like 100,000?..

Yeah I'm using a passo 1000cc...

While agreeing with gayanath's comments above, I couldn't help thinking about another possibility. What was the oil level when you gave the car for last service? Did you check the level immediately after the service? Do you get white smoke from the exhaust (cos for the level to come down from full to low mark within 1000km your engine must burn oil at quite a rate) Isn't it possible that they altogether forgot to change oil and gave you the car back as it was?

If no oil leak,

Then the possibilities,

1. Service person didn't fill the oil up to the required level - if you checked the level next day morning after the service, then, it could be eliminate.

2. As Rumesh88 said, didn't changed the oil by service person - if you checked the condition next day morning after the service, then, it could be eliminate

3. Oil burning increased since couple of months but you didn't noticed it. - As a thumb rule, you should exactly go for higher viscosity. As the burning is slightly high, need to go for xxW50 from next service onwords.

4. Sudden oil burning - Observe the white smoke as Rumesh88 said. You could do two things further. Observe the condition for another 1000 km refilling with 10W30 or if above 1 & 2 has verified by you previously, immediately replace the oil with xxW50 and observe the condition.

Note: More your millage means more engine wear. Which means more clearance between parts which required high viscosity oil. However, your case should be further investigated as above for conclusion.

I am not sure about the oil level after the service, since I didn't check that. :( So the summary/conclusion I made from the answers you guys gave, I am going to refill with 10W-30 and investigate more. If the burn continues, I'll change to a 15W-40.

sounds good?.

Another question

Is it normal that change the viscosity of the oil when mileage increases?..

Is it normal that change the viscosity of the oil when mileage increases?..

Hope you didn't read my post #5 carefully which self explain about this question under Note.

Again, yes it's normal that requirement of change (increase) the viscosity of the oil when mileage increases due to wear of the engine components. Its a thumb rule in automobile. 1000 cc small engines tends to wear more comparing with larger engines due to working with slightly high rpm and high vibration. If this oil burn started slightly at 100,000 km and current situation observed at 200,000 km, then its extremely normal. But in this case, as this occurred suddenly and the burning volume is high at 100,000 ODO, this case should not be ignored without investigation.

Difference between 10W30 & 15W40 is less. But yes, the best way is one step up for first time and observe which means using 15W40 in the next service. But, as your oil consumption is high, and if the problem is only due to engine wear, then I feel that 15W40 is not enough to get good result. So I recommends to use 20W50.

If you didn't check the level before the service nor that you checked it after the service and you do not see any white smoke from the silencer at 2000 RPM with the engine warmed up, then it is highly likely that your servicemen (whether it was at the agents or HRH's service doesn't make a difference) did not change the oil during the last service. If so the best approach is to change the oil and filter immediately with either 10W-30 or 15W-40 and keep monitoring the level every 1000km. However if you see white smoke then it is time you better be prepared for an engine repair. It could be one or more of the tappet guides or in a much worse case piston rings. gayanath has explained clearly why it is necessary to change the viscosity as the engine mileage increase.

I didn't see any white smoke, and the engine sound is like very smooth. Yeah maybe the service guy miraculously forgot to change the oil while not forgetting to add that to the bill.. :sad-smiley-066: :sad-smiley-066: :sad-smiley-066:

Today morning I refilled and changed the oil filter, lets see what happens.. and thanks for the guidance and information... :)
