Perfomance Loss After Air Filter Change

GayanR

Question

To the point,Guys I have been using my vios for the past 2 years and changed my air filter twice with Vic branded one which cost around half the price of an original.Start of this month I went with an original since then I encountered a significant performance loss in my car.I didn't thought it was due to the air filter so I did a total tune up with engine scan. But garage guy told there is nothing wrong in my car in the first place. So I told the garage guy that I replaced this air filter with an original. He said It might have an effect but the acceleration is really good. But I just can't get my head over with how it used to be.Car was so peppy now it feels like it's dying for breath.Acceleration is good but significantly slow than how it used to be.Fuel consumption is about the same may be somewhat improved. Is this normal behavior due to an air filter change?

The older air filter had rubber frame on corners and was very different than original.

Lets do a simple test. If you have old filter with you, then fix it again and check the performance. It will cost 0 rupees.

If you haven't old one, you have to spent for a VIC filter and check the performance (It will cost around 2000 rupees ne?)

Otherwise, what ever we told, you will not be convince as the feeling should be observed by you yourself.

What are the other maintenance things done with the air filter change ?

Note: Technically, there could be minor performance difference due to difference of pressure drop of different filter material and the effective area, but it shouldn't be significant performance difference as you mentioned. If so, no one will use VIC filters for their vehicles.

Hi gayanath I don't have the old filter with me.I Replaced only the air filter myself as I couldn't do it at the service station that's the only thing i did.As you said that is the best option. What I'm curious to now is my older filters looks different than what VIC recommends me for vios (vic a197)

My older one looks like this.

Don't bother about the visual difference. It's quite normal that aftermarket parts are visually different than OEM products. I prefer original but there are people who prefer after market products than original.

Thinking about gayanath suggestion. Does performance have relation with ECU learned data ? If so like to add one more step.

  1. Fix the old VIC filter again and check performance.
  2. Re-fix the new (said original) filter, reset ECU and check performance.
