Hi friends,

Recently I experienced a sudden sound generating from underneath of my car, Nissan N16 - 2000 model, when i started to move from 01st gear. It gradually decreased when i moved into higher gears. After a while I experienced a little stiffness in my steering wheel & this kept on increasing in the same ride making it so hard to turn the car. I somehow managed to drive back home with unbearable stiffness in the steering & wonder why this had happened so quickly since I used to service my car at regular intervals.

Kindly let me know the reason for this as I'm clueless about it & appreciate if you all could suggest me a good place around Kiribathgoda area to get the problem fixed.

Cheers.

First, I have no idea how N16 engines work. But commonly I can suggest below tips for you.

  • Hope that you don't get any sounds from the engine that causes from a loosen belt?
  • Check the power steering oil level and make sure its full. If its empty, then you have a problem and you need to get the PS pump inspected.
  • Your belt that drives the power steering pump is broken. Inspect it well.
  • Your power steering pump is giving problems. In this case, you need to get the PS pump inspected.

Hope this helps to detect the problem at your level.

To add to Nishan.dj's comment, it could be due to an oil leak in the power steering system as well. A gradual increase of stiffness in the steering can be due to the loss of oil as pressure builds up in the system.
