503whp Evo Viii

My friend's Evo VIII has been stuck in his garage for the last few months while he tore it apart and put it back together. He just got it tuned earlier this week and it made 503whp on race gas. Supposed to make 430whp on 93 octane.

Mods:

- TXS U-Tec

- RNR GT35R Kit

- Peakboost Intercooler

- HKS 264' cams w/ ARP headstuds

- HKS Cam Gears

- HKS (HiPower) Cat-Back exhaust

- Ultimate Racing 3" Test pipe

- Perrin Fuel Rail

- Precision 1000cc Injectors

- Exedy Twin Plate

- Walbro 255 Fuel Pump

It wasn't too hard really. Just took a long time because he did all the installs himself (with some of us helping him when we were available). He had the cams and the U-Tec (piggyback ECU) on for a while, so the car was pretty fast to begin with. What really bumped up the power was the garrett GT35R turbo. Due to the size it's very laggy, but makes a whole lot of power once it spools up. Probably good for drag racing, or an open track. But on a tight track it'll be a big disadvantage, unless you're running anti-lag :)

As for the tuning, it all depends on what kind of fuel maps the tuner started with and how much he tweaked it.

Of course. I have a friend who goes up there often to watch the races, so I'll just tag along. Can't guarantee anything because sometimes I'm on-call during weekends, so won't be able to go.

There are also a few clubs here that hold track days at LRP which I am thinking of attending.

A local photographer attends almost all the events in the region. Check out his site, I think he has pictures from last year's Ferrari days. Please don't direct link pictures from his site:

Good stuff! If you don't mind me asking how much has this all cost him? Is he running standard pistons?

Any plans for your car? other than what you have mentioned on ur profile.

Those kinds of mods are out of my range, and in the autocross events I do we get bumped up into a higher class as soon as we put any major mods, so there's very little that I can do. Once I'm ready to move up to a higher class I'll probably start looking at suspension mods, exhaust, and get it tuned. But that's a long way to go :)

Awsome pics! Did/do you live/work here or were you on holiday? I'm about 2 hours away from there, close to the NY state border.

I was working in New Jersey for about a month. July 05. Made the trip then. Lime Rock and Intrepid were pretty much the highlights of my stay. But we are going OT. :)

Hey easy man, no need to get sarci, he's just replying my question, don't need no "blazin-gihanFX" again! :)

What an asshole! Probably some stupid ricer with a lame Nissan... just kidding, that's my idiot brother :D

Anyway, back on topic. I got a ride in my friend's Evo last night. It was absolutely crazy. He still had some of the C16 race gas left, so I got to see what 500whp feels like. The idle is really rough, probably because of the new fuel maps and the cams, but he's had those same cams on for a while and it was never like that. The turbo definitely kicks in much later, maybe around 4k rpm. Can't really concentrate on watching the tachometer when you're holding on for life :) But when it hits, oh man! The tuner raised the fuel cutoff to 8,200 rpm because before you know it you're already there and still in the power band. Also the external wastegate from the turbo goes stright down into an open pipe and doesn't go back into the exhaust, so when the wastegate is open it's loud as hell. You can't :o even hear the turbo spool.

For a track like Katu this will be ideal because on those two straights you'll be flying. But if you let your rpms drop, you're dead.

To end the night, another friend of mine had gotten his WRX tuned, so was taking me for a drive. About 2km from the house he turned onto a big road, redlined it in 1st, shifted to 2nd, and BANG! Broke 2nd gear :o We tried to get the car off the road, but could hear something rattling inside the gearbox, and eventually it got wedged between some gears and jammed everything. Had to wait two hours for a flatbed truck to come and take it home. Subaru put a much weaker gearbox in the US WRX (STi gearbox is the same worldwide) so this is very common here.
