WHP= common TLA for BHP measured at the wheels

It is customary for most manufacturers to publish the BHP of an engine measured at the crank. But most tuners measure the BHP at the wheels of a car with the aide of a dyno.

For a given car, the WHP measured will be less than the manufacturer published figure (usually measured at the crank) due to mechanical losses.

For example, a 350Z is rated by nissan to have 287 bhp. But when put on a dyno, it makes about 230 bhp at the wheels.

This value is also highly dependent on the type of dyno that is used.

thanks!!! very useful info!! Ya, i've heard about the loss of power during the transisson from the engine to the wheels, mostly due to the Momentum that is also gained by the other moving parts in the power line.

Dude thats not bad.. the little G-tec meter we have here gave a whp reading of 150 on 220hp H22 EuroR. If I'm not mistaken bikes should have a much better turn around from hp to whp? Shaks?

That figure is highly variable. But i have seen a lot of numbers in the 230-240 range.

Here is some food for thought, it is rumored that for the Skyline GT-R, nissan sometimes quoted the WHP to abide by the gentlemans agreement of 280 bhp. So in fact its crank numbers were much higher.

No wonder a nice heavy 280 BHP (WHP) Skyline can stick with a 276 BHP (crank value) Evo/STi.

well power losses on a bike can vary dependin on tyre size, chain friction or even the number of spokes on ur rear wheel...effectivly 20-25%...a standard CBR250RR that has 40hp at crank wud hav abt 30whp...
