no its not true. VVTI has been around for a long time and used in multiple models that have been quite successful.

VVTi(timing) alone is not good , it has to be combined with VTEC(lift) like Honda does

Only bad thing I heard is VVTis more prone to sludge if engine oil replacements are not done on time

Yup, make sure to change the oil correctly or the engine will sludge up quickly!
