Gear Problem

Hi guys,

I got my toyota DX wagons, CV joints change last weekend and also change fuel filter. But now i can't go more than 40 kmph in 3rd and 60-70kmph in 4th. But before last week i could go on speed upto 60 on 3rd gear easily while around 80-100 in 4th gear. what could be the problem. Hope any of you guys have a solution.

Last from what I can understand your problem probably has something to do with the fuel filter, and whatever the guys did to adjust the fuel injector or the carburettor depending on which system you have got.

Its possible you might have changed the fuel filter witl an inferior quality one which is not letting enough fuel in or its not the correct model. Check that out first and get back to us,

Because you seem to be complaining about the pulling power of the car reducing thus you are not able to achieve the speeds you are used to achieving during gear changes, if its not a problem with the fuel system (the fuel filter being the obvious culprit since you had it changed) then your car either needs a tune up or has a problem with the transmission possibly the clutch or the preassure plate,

my hunch is the fuel filter,

if itz da 1.5L one, it should easily do 90kmp on the 3rd gear effortlessly... that car has got some serios venom with itz light weight!

Just thought of posting on the same thread.

This particular carina suddenly stopped starting. Not even a click. First thought it’s something to do with the starter motor. But when the power given straight to the engine it started moving, moved forward in every position... even in neutral and reverse. Gear leaver (A/T) feels really slack. Is this something minor?? Or the gear box is messed? It looks like the car is running on one gear, which could be the reason car doesn’t start the normal way. Advice plz...

Could you please elaborate on what you mean when you say power given straight to the engine.

also do you mean that no matter what position your place your gear level in (and i asume this is an automatic transmission) the car always moves forward ?

Which generation of carina is this ?

@ ash - one of ma pals had a similiar prob and happens once the plates in the gearbox are wasted.. thus going only in one gear.. anyways.. let the Don do his work lol.. if IT IS the gearbox then expect some deep holes in the wallet..

My mother car had a similar problem, an Auto wingroad….. after getting the fuel filter, air filter and spark plugs changed with a throttle body clean the car shakes violently when on neutral- can only drive in the D1 mode.

The problem was – carbon causing a vale to jam….. according to the agents as the guy who fixed it was not able to solve the problem.

I'm not really not sure of the model. Probably AT212 96-98 model I guess. Not the new shell / and the normal rear lights (not clear indicators)

Actually this is my farther-in-laws. He got a mechanic close-by since it happened y'day and the car was at home. The guy has by-passed the starter motor and has started the car. It’s an automatic transmission car. Once it’s started it started moving forward, no response what so ever to the gears. Even moved forward in the reverse gear. The guy has taken the starter motor for repair. I’m sure motor is fine.

Any idea???

Auto gear boxes are beyond my understanding. One thing though I must suggest is this might be one of those opportunities that it might be better going to Toyota Lanka to get a diagnostic done.

also if it is the gear box being a Toyota I think you should be able to find a replacement for a relatively reasonable price quite fast, and maybe Toyota Lanka might aggree to fix a re con gear box in (as i remember once A*W did that for a gear box for a March that belongs to a friend).

The opinions are divided here between Nexgen and Mazdaspeed as to the cause of the problem, and I am sorry I can't say anything for definite myself,

But if it is the auto box, the faster you get this repaired the more chance you have of being able to repair the problem rather than replacing the whole gear box.

the problem could also be electronic, since some cars have an ECU to control the automatic transmission as well, and the starter motor problem is a symptom not actually the cause of the problem, because obviously there is an issue apart from the car failing to start.

Thanx Don, Nexgen & Mazdaspeed.

The guy has taken the starter motor for servicing and has replaced the solenoid. Let’s see after he fixes it back. I also think it’s better to take it to the agents, without going for the trial & error learning.

Will let know what happened.

hmmm, auto cars starters do not engage if the gear is in a drive postition. If u gear is somehow stuck in D1, then it is possible that the starter motor is not engaging due to the way it is supposed to work, and not due to some problem in the starter motor per say (I know coz I've done it Not used to them auto cars and forgot to put it out of drive into Park when I stopped my moms car. Sweated for a few mins while trying to figure out why the brand new car wasn't starting too )

So, probably the gear box is stuck in D1 and its not responding to the lever at all. What to do, no idea.

Check clutch/ pressure plates.

Any decent mechanic will root out the problem...DX wagons are great cars with not much that goes wrong. DX is a Carb model.

If you are lucky...its just something wrong with the contacts/sensors. But most probably the gearbox mechanism is busted due to running without changing the transmission oil for very long periods (Happens a lot since its something people forget).

Last time we had the problem with a Premio with over 200k on the clock. We had to change the box. Got a used engine and box for 50k. Keeping the engine a a spare.

Most probably. He’s one of those who runs the car forgetting that got to service in due intervals.

Just a related question... braking from below 60-70s while switching to D2 is considered bad to the engine or is it kinda harmless? from the way my machine goes.. the 2nd gear goes upto about 80 odd me think.. so if I am to brake while switching to D2 would it in any anyway effect the engine or transmission?

Gears o mine r P, R, N, D, 2, L ...

Generally using the gearbox to slow down the vehicle (even in a manual) puts stress on it (and the engine). this can wreak all kinds of havoc.
