Wel.. frankly right now.. when it comes to the war between nVidia and ATI, nVidia has made some considerable breakthroughs and more often their cards are priced kinda lower in comparions to the ATI cards.. there was a time when ATI was a leader but its status has since then followed a downsliding effect..

AMD has now taken over ATI from what i hear.. so you outta expect some graphical tech breakthroughs soon.. but for now.. nVidia RoX!!!

Intel & Nvidia Rocks

AMD and ATI Sucks

anyway now both companies r one bt still i dnt think AMD and Ati can Dominate the Gaming Worls bt the sad thing is most ppl go to pc shops and tell them i want to buy a pc with 3.Ghz cpu and 128 Mb vga card then the seller Essamble a pc with Amd 3Ghz cpu bt the actual speed is less that 2.5Ghz

when u compare nvidia geforce fx 5200 with Ati Radion 9200 ( Sri lanka most Famous Vga Cards ) the price is very similer bt the Ati card sucks

If u buy network item from s'pore u get 3 yrs warranty for Netgeat bt 1 year warranty for D-Link anyway i never had any trouble with netgear products bt many ppl told me linksys r better than the rest bt its very difficult to find Linksys products in s'pore and u only get 1 year warranty

SLs just cheap for namesake in IT man.. computer stuff are stil way cheaper over in Singapore.. if ya knw ya way around the plc that is...

And dude.. rather than purchasing Creative X-Fi sound cards why not opt for the alternative brands? a research report i read suggests that the differences are so minor between them in comparison to huge price gap..

As for speaker.. Was a fan of creative but i guess with their prices my affection is switchin to Logitech.. heard plenty o good stuff bout em..

Both are equally good but lately Nvidia has pulled ahead in the race..

Also, they have a serious presence in the chipset segment..

For what it counts, here are my thoughts:

CPU - INTEL and AMD both are good.

UP until the Core2, AMD processors tend to be faster, cheaper, better, but core2 beat AMD fair and square.

That said the latest versions of the quad core chips from AMD promise to be more efficient. With the move to 65 (and 45 nm process) most of us are cautiously optimistic about AMD's future in chip building.

Speaking of chips, AMD's quad core CPU's are quite interesting (from a design perspective) but sadly aren't beating core 2.

On a slightly related note - AMD have a new agent in Sri Lanka. Can't remember who the company was but they were sponsoring the Vista launch.

MAINBOARD - GB, Asus, MSI, just about all are pretty good. Some of the NVIDIA chipset mobo's have spectacular performance.

Intel make good boards ( :) Fuzzo ) which are suprisingly bargain priced here in SL.

Asrock (a recent entrant) are relatively good.

Tip: I recommend buying a board from a known manufacturer (GB,MSI,ASUS etc) with a good chipset:

if you are using Intel chips, buy an Intel chipset. Make sure you buy a chipset which is Core2 ready.

Nvidia also make spectacular chipsets but there may be compatibility issues.

RAM - Kingston is the leader... that said, again most modern ram makers are OK. Samsung especially who produce the stuff by the ton

Tip:Buy at least 1 - 2 GB of RAM, make sure it is PC1066 at least, and get a good brand like Kingston - their valuram is quite... er... economical?

VGA - NV, ATI, both are OK. SIS are bearable in the value segment, and Intel make do in the onboard areas

Tip: buy a PCI Express motherboard and card. AGP is obsolete.

HDD - Hitachi are quite popular... others are also fine..

TIP: Get 7200RPM or higher, and make sure you USE A HARD DISK COOLER. THIS is a must in sl.

SOUND CARDS - doesnt really matter these days as most sound is onboard

SPEAKERS - again, not very important, depends on your taste

MONITOR - VIEWSONIC - yes I agree, viewsonic do a great job. Aside from them Samsung are OK.

NETWORK - dlink & netgear are quite popular, another brand called planet are popular for routers here.

KEYBOARD - generic/anything will do. Get one that has soft keys as this is less of a strain on your hands

CD/DVD/RW - NEC are known for brilliant burners, pioneer are popular for compatibility.

Buying a CDRW makes no sense, go for a dvd burner, preferrably 16x +/- capable

MOUSE - Waccom make nice tablets, on the value side genius also make great pointing gear.

CASING - If you are setting up a modern PC get one with lots of space, good airflow and a CPU air intake

(for C2D etc) also

you forgot to mention PSU

one of the most important components!!

well... again, hard to say as nobody has official brands here just generic chinese crap

machan to get discounts u need to buy in bulks atleast 6 items, then u get discounts and to buy computer parts there is only one place " Sim Lim Square " bt one advise never buy anything from indian Shops

And the cheepest place in earth to buy pc parts is USA, i buy all items from www.zipzoomfly.com bt they dont ship to Sl

Wel.. i used to be quite a fanatic when it comes to computer parts.. even went ahead to purchase a X800 a few years back which was like 80000/- lol.. good thing the deal never went thru.. and right now I am satis with the stuff i ve got..

though i am hunting for bargain places in SL.. wellawatte got some pretty cheap stuf though hard to get what ya want..

as for the USA i find that at times the purchase price + shippin makes it quite a bit costlier than buyin it from here.. though when it comes to GPUs, there is definitely a good bargain at times..

coming to nVidia vs Ati.. Ati is released the X600 which i feel (from the initial spec/benchmarks) surpasses the 8800GTX by quite a bit o framerates.. kinda happy in a way for the simple reason.. the prices would drop lol..

a freaking dual core 3 odd gig processors comes to 20+k over here.. so i guess a bit more time would make it affordable.. the quad cores definitely interesting but till it becomes affordable i guess its best to turn ma head elsewhere.. lol...

For those interested in superb gameplay performance.. there is the Physx card by Ageia (not sure bout the price) which would indefinitely boost physics in games supporting it.. a demo via half life really got me in awe.. but it comes at a bit steep price too...

Overall a decent config :-

P IV Dual Core

Asus Mobo with nVidia chipset

nVidia 7900GT

1 GB DDRII 677 Kingston

250 GB SATA 7200 RPM

ASUS DVD-Writer

These core components are suffice.. for me it seems the purpose of having a standalone sound card is lost cuz as saturn says everythins inbuilt.. and the chipset used for this type o audio is also of very very good quality.. though ya ll benefit the Environment Surround (EAX Tech) mainly by Creative stuff..

intel is launching the quad core in SL next month. it should be available to purchase a month or 2 after that.... AMD have always been present in SL, they have just not been too aggressive in their marketing.

as for boards from intel, there is a major supply shortage of entry level boards, so better look at other brands such as asus. asrock is catching on as well and it is quite cheap...

Hows asrock qualitywise eh? Only stuff which I d buy would be Asus, Abit, Intel n Gigabyte.. Gigabyte though got some major quality issues cuz I ve used one too many boards and most o em develope some fault on the way.. but they got some good features to back it up..

asrock is starting to do quite well in the market.. it hink the board is around 5k ... its doing extremely well outstation....

the quality of the board is quite good too for what you pay... only issue is that you should use good ram. if you use generic stuff, the board won't recognize it.

Fuzzo: Any idea about what price the quad core will debut at locally?

Also.. what are the rough prices for Core2duo entry level?

I'm getting crazy quotes from dealers.. almost as if they say the first number over 30 k that enters their mind :) :)

On the subject of core 2, are allendale processors such as the E4300 available here? what are the rough pricing?

Just a note - (correct me if im wrong) but if you are buying asrock, make sure you buy a board with a good chipset for dual core/core2 and dual channel ram. Some boards have VIA chipsets which aren't as good performance wise as the intel chipset?

Personally I am wary of Asrock as they are a new company (though may be a renamed older company)?

I would stick to known boards (e.g. MSI, GB, Asus, etc) BUT - fuzzo says they are good, and lots of people here and elsewhere use them without a problem...

BUT ensure you get the right chipset (with support for core2/dual channel ram).

Steer clear of VIA (unless you are going for a budget solution)

(no offense to via - they are good for budget end/low power consumption/amd processors but they suck for intel IMO)

EDIT: Via make amazing miniature boards for P3 and other 'older' processors, and are quite active in the mini pc/silent pc/car pc area..

There was a lappy with 8800GTX X 2 SLI setup.. it is quite a bit bigger than the normal lappy n graphx r the smoothest.. not to mention its a bloody heavy lappy.. lol

I ve already got a gigabyte DSP2 wit support for core-2-duo.. gotta read up cuz i saw it would support core-2-quad too.. but am kinda skeptical bout it.. quite a good mobo with solid transistor design..

just add bout 20 dollars to the release price of the quad core and ya could come up with an estimate.. this is mostly true as there is an intel office here in SL.. as for colour cards.. a dif bloody story.. 45k colour card = 80k priced here...
