Peugeot 406

Hi Guys,

I've got a 2000 model Peugeot 406 1.8 GLX Manual.... Used in the Uk and brought down here. It's a Brilliant car to drive, with great refinement and super handling..... but it has had a constant series of issues..... and some annoying little failiures that can become quite a hassle...

Number one is the Speedo..... Quite often, very suddenly, and with no discernible reason, it just cuts out totally...... this happens sometimes first thing in the morning, or even at completely random times of day..... and after awhile it just comes back on....... this is highly annoying , and even potentially dangerous....

Two is the Odometer.... When we got the car, it read 53,000 odd Miles. but about two weeks in, Me and a pal took the car for a long, hard run :D ... and when we got back, the damn thing was reading 470,000 miles!!!!! no thats not a mistype, it really did have six figures!!! since then it has counted from there and now reads 498000......

plus, the plastic clips that hold the Air Vents into the Dash have somehow disintegrated...... which means that said vents are very loosely fixed.....they can fall of if tugged.....

Has anyone else gonne through these issues with a 406? And any suggestions as to what I can do? I would really appreciate input..... I was wondering if it had anything to do with this being a UK car......

Thanks

I owned a 306 in UK. Peugeot are great cars to drive barring the reliability issues and quirks.

The speedo might have been meddled with and later messed up the mileage as a result. Most UK cars being brought down have done about 100k miles on the clock. Ofcourse 400k is possible if it was a UK police squad car.

The dashboard parts are known to break, melt and loosen even in the versions which come B/New after sometime. I used to stuff foam and paper to reduce the squeaks and rattles.

You might have to buy the AC vent or use a rubber pad to hold it in place.

Good Luck!

Hi,

The AC vent problem might have actually come about because of the hot weather in SL, I think UK pugeots are made in the UK (I think Peugeot Citroen has a factory somehwhere down south due for closure very soon) for the UK market and quite a lot of the parts for it is also sourced from the UK, so I am not sure the plastics etc have been tested to perform well in the tropical sun.

The speedo issue, I think must be an electronic one, I am not 100% but I think Pugeot may use a completely electronic system for the odometer and speedometer not a cable based mechanical one, and it might be the circuit which is at fault. Happens quite often with electronics, again might be due to humidity and hot weather, not sure, but I am sure the circuit itself would be quite cheap to obtain from the UK if you know somebody, cos lot of 406's arround thus must be no shortage of parts, as well as junked cars,

This is just me, but i recently drove the new 307 (06 model), and I absolutely hated it, i mean it was not the features or the comfort or the engine, but i thought peugeot had really over done it, and all the electronics in it, I just found on the way and annoying he he, like for example, it had automatic wipers on, and i could not find a way to disable this option, so in slight rain it would come and obscure my view !!. Felt well built, and the engine was excellent, but I just didn't feel comfortable driving it.

Thanks for the input,

Yes things do loosen and there are a few rattles coming from inside the doors too.... i think i'll try the foam and paper idea..... when the Knob that moves the vent left and right came off i used blu-Tack!!! :D

ah well... the drive makes up for it B)

Thanks Man,

yeah, the speedo actually IS electronic, so it could be a sensor bug, or as milindu has said, could even be that the mileage was messed with in the Uk and this is the result.....

Yes my car was assembled at the Ryton (i think thats the name..) plant in the UK... in october 2000. so i gues it's a combination of Age and the tropics.....

as to the 307, personally i'm not a huge fan.... it's too much like an MPV for me... especially compared to the 306!! and they have loaded it with a lot of gizmos that seem to distract you from the driving..... which, when you give it a proper run, is not all that enjoyable, for me anyway....

but the older pugs (i:e: anythin with a 6 at the end :D ) they are superb..... lets just say that after the 406, i don't think I'd properly enjoy ANY other normal 4 door saloon...... it's THAT great....... :D

Anyway, Thanks a lot....

cheers

Can't you get the Odometer corrected by a local guy. I've heard that there're guys even turn the electronic OD's back. Sorry I don't have any connections though. :(

I dunno machan, not heard of anyone....... plus, that damn dashboard is all electronic.... might stop working alltogether if one of our johnnies tampers with it......

The yellow coupe is a V6. Gorgeous car eh? Not sure about V6 406 saloons tho. There are a couple of 605 I know.

There was a pre-face lift 2.0 petrol turbo once advertised. But that was a long time ago.

There's supposed to be a guy who imports used parts somewhere in Battaramulla. You might try to locate him and get the vents.

I agree its a great drive!

the Yellow 406 Coupé belongs to non other than Yasendra Amarasuriya who owns the agents for Peugot C*r M*rt

doubt the brakes were done by brembo but the styling was all Pininfarina

V6 + Front wheel drive = Torque steer i'm guessing! :alc:

Yeah he's the guy who owns it. Styled and manufactured by Pininfarina in Italy so brakes could be Brembo. Actually its the weight of the engine is the issue. Everyone prefered the 2.2 HDi!

brakes ARE brembo mate... I'll show you the Test.... and suprisingly all the reviews said that the chassis could more than handle the power......

you don't neccessarily have to have a VG30DE and Rear Drive to make a drivers car u knw :P

You're right mate. RWD is often overated. Now hot hatches are pushing 240bhp thru the front wheels without a problem - Mazda 3 MPS, Vauxhall/Opel Astra VXR and the Seat Leon Cupra.

Of course RWD offers better balance though.

<_< hey the Cortina was a very decent car...n if i'm not mistaken it was Rallied or used in the British Touring car championships

the 2 door with the V6 on the Mk4 Cortina made a nice drive! :D n although it sits up a bit it can actually manage to corner-feels butch B)

Nah that would be the Escort and the Capri Respectively..... both have a FAR better image that the 'Tina..... but suprisingly mechanically they were not THAT much different (excepting the Legendary RS models of course....)

I dunno abt the Mk4 2-Door V6 tho..... no idea......

and if your thinking Lotus Cortina..... that was in a different League altogether :( one of the true classics.... what i meant was the ordinary, run-of-the-mill models... when the first one came out, CAR said, Quote:

"A Calculated attempt to sell the public ordinariness"

sums it up really don't ya think?

btw sorry mods i realized this is a bit OT.....

Hey Supra N you're absolutely right. The Mk4 'Tina was a bit over hyped, probably by the British press. And the compettion it had was the totally crap Morris Marina.

We had a Mk4 1.6 GL as our family car when I had just learned to drive. I thought it was quite awful. The steering was extremely heavy and the ride was jiggly.

Lotus Corti's were Mk1 and 2. Loads of competition success.
