Hi Guys,

Do you notice that we can see many unregistered luxury vehicles like montero's in roads these days. As I heard that all the Ministers, MP's and even the "pradesiya saba" people got their permits and they all have imported at about 1000 luxury vehicles.

The funny thing is that govt. has enough money to pay these things and they are charging a very high Tax when a local trying to buy a normal car. And also as a Undergraduate I know that our universities are running out of lecturers because all the Doctors and Professors even Normal graduates are leaving the country and going abroad looking for better living conditions. They even didn't got a permit to buy a normal car over last ten years but our govt.'s are paying millions of bugs for their parliamentarians who even didn't pass eight grade to buy luxury vehicles tax free every time a new govt. comes.

Who's fault is this?

I just cant understand why we have to pay for these idots to go in luxury vehicles using the peoples money. Why cant we just put them on a train... give them a train pass and a bus pass as well. the amount our government spends on the ministers is just a crime using the peoples money.

this world ain't all fair-square buddy. itz easy to live with such an understanding. sri lanka is still quite a fun place to live... nothing like home :) ... but i tell you what as long as you keep pushing your self, there is still opportunity left in this country...

why is it the people's fault???

coz people voted the so called idiots into power.. haven't you heard ...

People get the government that they deserve

you know I never considered that. For the 18 million people and the size of a country less than the state of florida Sri Lanka does have a huge number of politicians. I bet the ratio of politicians to civilians is very high. Does sri lanka need all those? Look at the benifits of reducing the # of politicians ... there are many

duh.. if theres one thing sri lankans are captains at.. that is deception.. that is what each and every leader since premadasa have been doing.. unfortunately people cant be blamed as there intentions are always based on their best interest (people's interest)... so if the one they chose suddenly turns corrupt you cannot put the blame on the people alone dude.. money corrupts and unfortunately that is what s happening to our glorious pot bellied minsters..

what we need is a set of disciplined individuals who really cares for the society.. trust is a must but in our govt peoples trust s misused for their own benefits..

bah i hate politics anyways.. lol

I basically think permits for politicians should simply be scrapped, for I cannot understand why our politicians needs so many vehicles apart from the vehicles they get as part of their ministry.

Basically every politician should have a vehicle but it should probably reflect the level of office they hold. This the government will provide (cos they anyway use the office vehicles).

when their term has ended the government will auction these vehicles and buy new ones for the next lot.

And apart from people who are under security threat, others should get a practical vehicle as a double cab probably a TATA :) cos it only really need to last 4 years. I think considering the duty the government looses in these permits, getting them vehicles works out cheaper, though i am sure this will not work in practice.

also the policy of government servants getting permits should be replaced with a system of any citizen getting a duty concession on a vehicle import which would be tied to the amount of tax they pay to the govenemt cos sri lanka has a big problem with the payment of income tax, and thus them most hard working people who pay their tax would have an incentive for doing so, a sort of a tax credit,

I am obviously just waffeling, cos i am sure Isru is right, there is still a lot of opportunity in SL, though our politicians becoming better is still some way off ...

I must say, u are the first guy I've ever seen to come up with what I think could be a practical working solution for this prob. This sorta thing should go up the line. Too bad the ppl who can put it into effect will percive themselves as loosing something and not do it, but it should be at least marketed as an alternative. A Letters to the editor in a newspaper perhaps?

agreed - very good idea

but making it to é papers is doubtful - given that ANCL will ot publish anything which is even remotely unflattering or critical - be in contructively - of é govt.

if it make it in any of é others it'll be ignored by those who r in power - cu any other form of press which highlights thier faults n flaws is percieved as an enemy as evil as Satan!

We can come up with many brilliant ideas on who should be driving what and such but nothing will change in this country. We would need an event similar to the one that wiped out the dinosaurs to happen here and unfortunately that would probably wipe us out too but in the long term building up a society starting from cave men would be a step forward in this country.

I apologise if Im being weird but I just saw a Cayenne being escorted by 2 defenders (complete with waving soldiers). That is pretty depressing on top of the 40 80 million buck BMW's our veddha buggers are getting.

I don't think these topics are meant to be conclusive, nor is it actually meant to come up with something useful, and Fuzzo is quite correct, in a way its quite pointless,

But sometime or the other, the frustration of what is happening around us gets to us, and we all need a venting point and thus gives birth to topics like this ...

I hope at least the members of this forum would remember when voting, firstly to vote (cos there is no point saying no point and doing nothing) and also not to vote along party lines but to vote for people who would contribute to change the situation, and also not expect changes rapidly. Obviously there is no rationale to justify a minister needing a Porche Cayenne to meet his electorate, but in the end somebody voted to put such people in power.

Lets end it there I guess, i see no reason to continue, I am all vented out :)

I have one question though, are Kit cars legal in SL ? like Caterhams ?

Practically anything manufactured abroad is Street Legal here....

Including unsafe looking three wheel contraptions and all sorts of 'brand new cars' which cannot be sold in other markets because they cannot pass the required safety and other fitness tests

We can always opt for anything at elections. But we always have failed promises. Sad to see when a giant country like India are settled in their Ambasodors we are all in luxury vehicles. Did you read papers that new bullet proof fleet is 80milion?
