Toyota Axio NKE165 Hybrid, Petrol engine consuming loads of fuel

Hello guys,

I need help, I have a 1500cc 2016 Toyota Axio hybrid WXB with 89,000km on the ODM. The hybrid system kicks in and works really well. Here is the problem, the petrol engine guzzles a lot of fuel to the tune of 2km/l. This happens whenever the car is running on the petrol engine, even in idling the display shows the fuel consumption at below 5km/l, images attached for reference. The car moves really fine and on a highway i get an average consumption of 22km/l at best that's after driving very "carefully and responsibly" making highway driving really slow (80-100km/hr).

I have changed spark plugs, used the recommended engine oil (0-20W), replaced the fuel filter and done full service but the problem persists, I've gone to several garages and all keep recommending i change the same parts which is frustrating, could it be an engine problem? can someone help on how i can troubleshoot this issue?

FYI

Compared to another Toyota Axio hybrid at 120,000km ODM, my car's engine sounds heavier n more rough. (In my Axio I do at best 22km/l in the other Axio I causally did 28km/l without careful and responsible driving and over 30km/l when careful.)

Help needed,

Ronnie

Well....have you gone and gotten the car checked out ? Perhaps an ECU read out or even an emissions test might reveal if there is anything wrong with the combustion and things like fuel and airflow are messed up. Apart from that...what is the condition of the engine in general ? air filter, spark plugs, fuel filter, etc...are in good shape? No visible oil leaks or sludge build-up? Hybrid system charging is okay and the system kicks in and supports the engine as it should? You said it runs fine so I am assuming you have done eCVT fluid changes (2 or 3 by now).

The spark plugs, ait & fuel filter are all ok, actually I had those replaced during the last service. The Hybrid system works perfectly. The eCVT fluid change I ve done one solar that's at 70,000km current at 89,000k ODM.

Let me try out the emission test, hopefully something will come up.

Well...check if the fuel and air flow (and eventually combustion) is according to spec. Check for any compression losses or ignition issues. There could be a whole host of reasons but these would probably be a good starting point.
