Racing doesn’t get any more dramatic than this and, in 2007, the event will take place to the equally exciting backdrop of the new state-of-the-art Wembley Stadium. Created in 1988 by Fredrik Johnsson, President of IMP, and the world’s greatest lady rally driver Michèle Mouton, The Race of Champions was originally conceived as the ultimate shoot-out between the top international rally stars. Over the years it has also proved immensely popular with the biggest stars from all the major motor sport disciplines, including F1, World Rally, NASCAR, Le Mans, Indy500, Champ Car, DTM, WTCC, etc. The list of past winners reads like the “who’s who of racing”. World Rally Champion Sébastien Loeb took the title in 2005 and Heikki Kovalainen claimed it in 2004. They join a distinguished group that includes world rally champions Juha Kankkunen, Stig Blomqvist, Didier Auriol, Tommi Mäkinen, Carlos Sainz, Colin McRae and Marcus Gronholm. Wembley Stadium will host the world famous Race of Champions on Sunday 16th December 2007 in front of an audience of over 75,000 spectators. The Race of Champions sees the world’s best circuit racers and off-road drivers come face to face on a spectacular parallel track to determine who is the fastest. Not for the weak hearted, only the most daring drivers in the business will take up the challenge and get behind the wheel. Now for the first time this gripping race will be staged in the dramatic setting of the new state of the art Wembley Stadium. Fredrik Johnsson, IMP President, organiser of The Race of Champions Nations Cup said: “After three fantastic years at The Stade de France in Paris, IMP was contacted by some of the world’s most prestigious stadiums who wanted to stage the 2007 ROC, but when we were approached by Wembley Stadium the choice became easy! I’m sure that the world’s best drivers will be thrilled about the opportunity to compete at this most legendary venue. For the British fans it’s a fantastic opportunity to see this unique motorsport event in the brand new Wembley Stadium where they will have a magnificent view of the entire track from every seat in the stadium.” Michele Mouton, Co-founder of ROC and acclaimed as the world’s best female rally driver of all time said: “When I was rallying, either during the RAC rally or the British championship with my Audi Quattro, I really appreciated the enthusiasm and the support of the huge crowds cheering the drivers on along the rally road. I can’t wait to be inside the new Wembley Stadium on the Race of Champions track. With all the enthusiastic and knowledgeable British fans watching I am sure the atmosphere will be incredible!” Motor racing will be a first for Wembley Stadium, which has been built with the flexibility to stage a number of different world class sporting events. For The Race of Champions a specially constructed parallel asphalt racing track will be built over Wembley’s pitch and 16 drivers will line up side by side under Wembley’s famous arch in identical cars to determine the ultimate and fastest racer. Devinda_Z
Race of Champions 2008 results World rally champ Loeb edges out Coulthard to take victory By Stephen Dobie 15th December 2008 Loeb fought Coulthard for a close victory. Picture: Mark Thompson/Getty Images Sebastien Loeb enjoyed a very tight Race of Champions victory at Wembley Stadium at the weekend, the recently retired David Coulthard ensuring the reigning WRC title-holder had to work very hard to take overall drivers honours at motorsport's end of season shindig. It was Loeb's third win at RoC, other victories coming in 2003 and 2005. The final was in best-of-three format, the French driver taking leg one, Coulthard winning leg two before a tight as you like third leg which Loeb bested by just 0.3 seconds to take home the winner's trophy. It comes at the same time as rumours that Citroen's rally ace fancies a crack at F1. Seven-times F1 world title winner Michael Schumacher was knocked out of the running in the very first round, but he did help Germany to the nations title alongside Sebastian Vettel. As usual, the contest was a nice mix of drivers, nationalities and vehicles. This years cars included the Abarth 500 (the Assetto Corso edition, no less), KTM X-Bow, WRC Ford Focus and of course, the RoC Buggy.
