Fuel Economy: 1998 Wingroad

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

ok, so now my 1st car is 3months with me. Still learning all the quirks of owning a motor vehicle, but learning a little every day.

I did my first "full-tank" petrol analysis and found out that my car did Rs3200 fuel for 185km. I guess that equates to 6.76km/Litre?

If correct, is this a good figure for a 1998 Wingroad (Engine: GA15DE)? Seems too poor to me

(All the running was within Colombo, approx 50% in rush hour traffic)

So you've done 185 km with 27.35 litres. The GA15DE based Wingroad I know perform a lot better than the delivered results, if your calculation is correct.

To start the whole thing again, top up the tank,Zero the trip meter, run for aprx 100km and top up again and devide the ran distance with the amount filled.Result is the actual burn-out figure.

If the results are still bad (matches with the earlier obtained average 6.8Km/l),you need to investigate a lot.

Bad driving is the main cause for unfavourable fuel-consumption figures !

Thanks miniace & Arc Angel for your replies.

miniace - I did do the way you have written. Pumped full, ran 185km, pumped full again which cost me Rs3200. I think thats the correct way to do the "full-tank" analysis right?

Arc Angel - its an Auto, WFY10 frame.

Any more comments? If something does look really bad with my fuel consumption figures, any advice the next step to take?

One of my uncles had and auto wingroad, HN plates and must've been 98 era model... his one was doing about 8 with zero tuning and proper air filter/spark plug changes etc...

all the man did was change the lubricants and other fluids :)

My guess is that you should take your ride for a diagnosis and do a tuneup...

it's gotta do around 8kmpl in colombo and little better outstation

Ripper, thks for your reply. I actually chged the engine oil, filters & transmission oil the week after I bought the car. The "full-tank" analysis was done after that, so I guess that option is already done, huh...

Based on the above replies, I guess the first step is to take my recent purchase for a diagnosis (fault: excessive fuel consumption), and probably do a tune up.

As this is my first car, not used to garages or mechanics yet. Can anyone recommend a good place to the above done (from a 1998 Nissan perspective)? The only place I know off is A*W :)

for tuneups etc...i'd stick to agents thought there are few experts out there specialising in different things like performance tuning, ecm remapping etc

the other few things you could've missed are sparkplugs, oxygen sensors being faulty, injectors getting clogged etc etc

all these can be checked during a proper diagnosis and tune up...

you car has to be doing better fuel unless you're driving at high revs and heavy traffic all the time

good luck :)

Actually Nissan is one brand you can safely take to the agents for tuneups without any worry. They always sort out the issue.

Been running a 2000 Wingroad (Manual) for the last 4+ years now. Colombo Economy averages between 9 and 9.5 easily.

Agents tune up with new plugs and injector cleaning done once a year works fine for me.

You should also check the fuel filter to see if it's clogged. Y11 Wingroad fuel filter is located in the tank as part of the fuel pump assembly, and I think the Y10 model also has the same type.

Devide 185km from the amount of litres needed to top-up.Thats the figure!

Further check the tyre size.Is it higher than the manufacturer specified? If thats the case, you maybe running more miles than it actuaaly shows.Check on this!
