Diesel Engine Tune Up ?

hi... can u guys tell me a good place to do a DIESEL ENGINE tune up ? and what i have to do for a proper tuneup ? thanks

AFAIK in engine tuneups D*mo is known to have a reputation and thats where a fellow 406 owner got his injectors cleaned and tuned up better check with them. First of all I wanted to ask what type of diesel engine is that, is it a common rail with EFI or typical mechanical pump type? if its pump type you can pressure the injectors and get the pump pressure adjusted from a normal injector pump repair joint. Though I've used diesel for 5~6 years I never done an injector pressure and pump job so i'm unable to point a good place to do this.

In diesel tuneup of a mechanical injection what you can do is

clean and pressure test /replace injector nozzles

pressure test /adjust diesel pump

make sure the engine compression is adequate

if its turbo boosted you can gain performance by adjusting waste gate

always use new air cleaner and clean it regularly with a pressured air flow (you can give 20 bucks to a fellow in a service station and get this done)

and more importantly if you have knowledge of what you're doing, you can advance the diesel pump a bit. This is what I've done in my previous 504 which had Toyota 1C diesel engine and made it first on the light always. (you have to bear with the black smoke though wink.gif )

in case of common rail EFI diesel engines there's not much an ordinary guy can do, in that case you better consult agents or D*mo. Mind you I don't have any personal experience with D*mo. Anyone? pls contribute

Tappert adjustment will make substantial impact

also check the diesel pump , injectors & nozzles

Low on pulling power is it?

good point Devinda but most new diesels you can't adjust the tappet but you can replace it and valve grinding but that's not vital to do as regular tune up isn't it? but it seriously lacks power why don't you go ahead with partial rebuilt of the engine? with piston rings and other worn out parts. I woke up an almost dead engine by just replacing piston rings and drove it for 4 years before it died again.

thanks guys...

Engine is a EFI turbo engine ( It’s a Toyota Hiace Super Custom). It has 155K kms on the clock and I just thought of doing a tune up.

And there’s a small sound coming from the engine when its going slow. A friend of mine said its coming from tappet or something…

is it possible to get rid of this sound ??? :(

no.... also not always, only sometimes

typical for an old motor. cam has been pushing this for years and worn out and there's a gap which triggers the noise but at lower temperatures, when it heated up or properly lubricated noise will go down. As devinda pointed out replace of tappets will solve the issue

  • 3 years later...

Hello!

My dad owns a 1996 Hiace Super GL diesel, I borrowed it for a month and i noticed it did only around 5km/l in Colombo with the a/c on in front. I am wondering if it is normal for a vehicle that old to average 5km/l. I did about 3000kms in a month and it pretty much got the same average every time i filled up. Btw i have got a heavy foot while driving. Would appreciate your feedback.

Thank You!
