Came across this today morning. Yet another massive burden on motorists.

http://www.dailymirror.lk/DM_BLOG/Sections...spx?ARTID=17665

Can some one clarify more on the below statement please

‘According to the new regulations, vehicles that have been imported to or assembled in Sri Lanka have to be registered within 30 days of importation or assembly’

Does that mean importers have to register the vehicles even though they are not sold?

wow. a petrol-diesel conversion is gonna cost 250,000 now!!! its like the government HATES diesel drivers geez!

but as for the 30day rule for registration, thats gonna put quite a burdon on the car-sales. But i guess it'll save the buyer the hassle of dragging his ass over the RMV, and having to bribe the people there to get your work done faster. tsk tskk tsk

But as for locally 'assembled' cars, it wont be that much of a issuer as all vehicles that roll out of the micro factory are pre-sold..... even if it isnt, they can leave one tiny part out (like the cigarette lighter) and 'assemble' it when they find a buyer :D

The real shocker these days would be to hear something having a price reduction :P

we're so used to seeing price hikes it doesn't even register anymore :action-smiley-060:

'According to the new regulations, vehicles that have been imported to or assembled in Sri Lanka have to be registered within 30 days of importation or assembly.'

Does it mean that the car sale man will become the first registered owner of the car if he couldn't sell the car with in 30 days from the import date?

Bharath, I think its possible registering a car as a motor dealer might be considered different to registering the car as a owner, so its possible the book will reflect this factor and the dealership will not be considered as one of the owners.

Lets hope the RMV has enough common sense to implement something like that, else the motor dealers will struggle to move cars as "unregistered" !!!

At the rate prices are increasing all round you this isn't surprising.

I wonder how the registration within 30days will work out. According to this statement even the b/new imports will be effected. Wonder whether its the purchase date rather than the import date coz there are many vehicles running on the road which are not registered.

I’m failing to understand the point behind registering the vehicle within 30 days. Especially when it’s not even sold to someone. Are these policy makers sitting on their heads when they come up with these ideas.

The way I see it government is so cash strapped they are tiring to squeeze out what ever is possible from the public. Hear the pension contributions from both parties are to be increased as well.

Trying to slow down currency leaving the country by making sure that vehicles which sit in the lots a long time without getting sold don't get into the country.

Wonder how premium brands can cope? Its not like they fly off the shelf. Going to a showroom to test drive a premium brand will not be an option. Which is not good news for the local car reviewers either.

Hold onto them rare sports cars boys. Won't be able to buy any in the future unless you look to get something down direct.

xXx I think if I'm not mistaken there was a drive for this a couple of years back as well. The reasons behind it was security.

Even right now there are people who run around in garage plates. Problem is these plates do not correspond to a particular vehicle but the owner of the plate. So using the plate you cannot identify the vehicle. With the present situation in the country I can understand why the government want to stop this practice.

I heard that it was reported in this evening news that these proposals have been put on hold for the moment..

Anyway a bit of gossip I heard is that a prominant car sale in Bamba has decided to stop bringing down vehicles for the moment. Logic is that you can earn more money off investing in risk free FD's rather than dealing with cars :P:)

heard from someone in the trade that the importers have to pay 25,000 per plate for each of the vehicles they hold in their stock or something to that effect...

Governments ultimate answer to everything from closing roads to HR violations to media suppression is ‘security’. Read in the papers that defense ministry has requested all the hotels in the grater Colombo area not to rent their rooms or reception halls during the SAARC summit. If the security situation is not favorable for such a high key event why have it in the first place?

Back in the days police use to crack on this very hard. Don’t know about the current situation. Why don’t they just increase the fine for running on garage plates

True dat. Made a friend of mine very unhappy coz his homecoming was scheduled in one of those hotels. Apparently its even been extended to Mt Lavinia Hotel. I'm a little foggy on why this is needed all the way in Mount Lavinia. Must be coz I am not a security expert. All those ppl planning weddings and stuff must be royally cheesed off.
