Hi friends. I am planning on buying a Mitsubishi Pajero IO (1999 model, auto transmission). My decision to consider a SUV is mainly because of high ground clearance and off roading capability. However, since fuel prices are very high now and can only expected to be rising further, I am concerned about the fuel consumption of Petrol SUVs. Could someone tell me what kind of Engine options are availble with Pajero IOs and their average fuel consumtion during city running?

Devinda_Z has one of these and the fuel consumption is pretty bad... somewhere on the order of 5-6 KM/l in town

Does it come with different engine options where some have better fule efficiency than 5-6 km/l?

AFAIK, it comes only with a 1.8L or a 2.0L motor, and most of them (perhaps even all) were automatics as well...

Those found in SL are mostly 2L afaik

The lightly high fuel consumption issue is something limited to the Brand New imports sold via UniMo sold as the "Montero IO" and have Non-GDI engines.

The reconditioned vehicles are the ones which are badged as "Pajero IO"s and these have the GDI engines - these engines , though known to face some of the small niggles seen in GDI engines when operating on the low Octane SL petrols, are said to be very good on fuel returning anywhere upto 10kmpl!

dev_Z ... 10 kmpl? that can't be right can it?

He is right abt GDI engines performing well, I know of one giving 9.something.
