The government has imported 31 bullet proof vehicles for the use of parliamentarians at a cost of 8.6 million US dollars, Chief Government Whip Dinesh Gunawardena told parliament yesterday.

Mr Gunawardena made the disclosure responding to a question by UNP MP Ravi Karunanayake.

He said 15 of these vehicles had been bought for 3.7 million Euros inclusive of duty, 12 for 1.8 million US dollars, and four for 1.3 million US dollars.

The government, however, declined to reveal the names of those who were using these bullet proof vehicles citing security reasons. The Chief government Whip said proper tender procedures had been followed before importing the vehicles.

These vehicles were purchased from Guana International, Ltd, England, M/s Nanigure International GMBH, Germany, M/s Daimler Chrysler AG Stvttgurt, Germany, Global Fleet Sales Co Ltd, Thailand, Svos Spol Syo, Czech Republic and Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd, India. Gunawardena said the government had taken all possible steps to ensure the security of opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe when Mr. Karunanayake asked whether at least one of those bullet proof vehicles had been provided to Mr. Wickremesinghe.

While thanking the government for providing security, Mr. Wickremasinghe charged that his security officials were being questioned over anonymous petitions sent against them.

these guys richly deserve to get these vehicles and more cos they face ltte threats since they are serving the country and it's people

we the ultra-smart people of this land will believe anything and everything the government propaganda folks are dishing out cos we know that our leaders are doing a great job... driving older cars at higher prices, pay insane amount of taxes for everything, take all the harassment against us thanks to V*P's etc etc is all ok cos our leader's know what's good for the country :violent-smiley-030::violent-smiley-099::angry-smiley-048::action-smiley-060:

Hold on to your engines boys ( and girls) another fuel price hike is round the corner.

Ripper – the best thing is we still got people thinking that the world food /fuel crisis is the sole reason that we are having such high commodity prices here.

Rumor has it that Pillayan has also been given 1 – a terrorist who killed civilians like u & me – now having the privilege of driving around whilst we stand still burning our fuel

In order for them to Cruz away in safety.

More than 12,000,000,000 ruppees and the guy just tosses the figures around like peanuts. And there is the Galle Road at Dehiwela-Mount with the corner lanes newly paved and the middle ones not even touched.

Did anybody notice a blatant lie? 12 cars at 1.8 million each would equal 21.6 million then and there, and this guy said 31 cars totaling 8.6mill? By my calculations, using the BOC published exchange rates, its closer to 111.5 million US. Or more than 12,000,000,000 ruppees.

Would anyone else like a try at the calculations? I just get the feeling I must have done something wrong to get this far off.

I have no issues with Piliyan getting one as long as it helps to bring him to the democratic path. Similar methods were used in Northern Ireland. But he should be disarmed. Actually he should have been disarmed when east was ‘liberated’. Since he's part of the government now I see no reason for him to be some sort of a war lord.

peri i think the total cost of the 12 cars was USD 1.8

Don't know why waste these money ,since there are least cost options ?. Instead of bullet/bomb cars our politicians can wear

bullet/bomb proof new tech metal jackets. This increases their Royal look & protects them outside the vehicles too. Later can introduce to ordinary people like us, since these threats exist for us too. Low cost !
