COLOMBO, June 16 (Reuters) - Sri Lanka has identified its first case of the H1N1 flu virus in a young patient who arrived from Australia over the weekend, the government said on Tuesday. "We have detected the first swine flu case in Sri Lanka. He is an 8-year-old Sri Lankan living in Australia. He has come to Sri Lanka via Singapore with a family of five. Only he has tested positively for H1N1 and is being treated," Health Minister Nimal Siripala DeSilva told reporters.

The H1N1 virus, commonly known as swine flu, emerged in April in the United States and Mexico, and has spread internationally.

A mixture of swine, bird and human viruses, it has killed 165 people and infected over 37,000, according to the World Health Organisation. (Reporting by Ranga Sirilal and Shihar Aneez; Editing by Jeremy Laurence)

another relative of his has apparently been confirmed as having the infection as well! :o

as per the news item they've came down in a group of 7 to participate a wedding and they've participated, now there are relatives whom have participated this event may be across island. Have to quarantine all or else they'll spread or might've spread already.

so if the girl was detected in sing and detained how come others were not checked for h1n1?

possible she was detained traveling with the same group and being in transit in sing right...

so these thermal scans are not the best way to ID h1n1... :(

suppose the flu virus doesn't really kick in until after a few days of exposure.... that's really worrying!!!!

The SL case was detected after the Child's father contacted authorities and complaint.None of the others of group of 11 arrived Singapore was ill.The First child was denied travelling in singapore because of the fever symptoms only.Subsequent investigations showed the H1N1 case.Even the first child showed the fever symptoms, a day after arriving SL.I dont know how far its fair to call them idiots mate.

how the sitiuation was hanndled is worrying isn't it?

authorities in SL detected one case in a group of seven but didn't take any action to quarantine the others

I'm sure they have done nothing yet to warn the others who arrived in the same aircraft, to take a test

the group knew they had two cases in the family already tested positive yet went ahead and participated in a wedding ceremony
