Actually I am considering doing a STI conversion... :) is it a good idea though? the base car and the engine + components are fairly reasonable in terms of cost, but what's the downside (other than the fact that the car will become very expensive to run and maintain, which I am prepared to live with). I mean are there any other better options in terms of getting a really fast car at a cheaper cost? I was planning to look for a Civic hatch and do a typr-r conversion but that's expensive, both the base car and the engine etc, Subaru seems more reasonable, but there is a catch (or three) I am sure...

The thing is that the 'easy' (none really are) conversions like the Type R's cost a lot more because of ease and popularity.. the WRX conversion maybe cheaper cause of the amount of work that needs to go in... Not too sure about an STi conversion being cheaper than a type R though.. Nigels the dude for these things..

Make sure u check into an Evo conversion at the same time. If they make it half as fast as Ashan's ..... wheeee..... :)

Dont mean to burst your buble but an STI conversion is not that easy. To start off with your base car should be appropriate. If i were to do the conversion i would start off with the all wheel drive sports version. This way you already have ur 4WD drivetrain sorted out for you to some extent and most components in the car including the chasis is closer to the WRX. It also has the exterior pretty much as well. I doubt the normal car chasis is as agile as the WRX one.

Some majour components needed to convert the base car would be

Engine/gear box

wire harness

Suspension/links/arms/Brakes

Computer (ECU)

4WD Drivetrain

Differential

Just to mention a few.

This alone will set you back atleast 400k-500k.These are without the cosmetic mods like the light weight aluminum bonnet (up to you to put a firbre one),meters, lights, front grill ,vents, but i spent atleast 300k on the cosmetic mods because everything i put in was the real deal, from japan. Wheels alone cost 90k. plus vat

But machan I think its great what the current owner has done to the car. I mean we lack in this department in SL. what i mean is Serious projects. If you really look around and get the right connections you can do it for lot lesser.

My advice is if you are going to do it GO FOR IT! You will learn loads about ur car in the process.

All the BEST!

Thanks for the info, much appreciated. BTW, was your car an AWD sports version?

I never thought of doing this conversion before but frankly, Nirosh's car has impressed me a lot, in terms of performance. He quoted 600k for all the engine and components as his cost. When you add the base car's price, and compare that with what a type-r conversion would cost, they are quite similar in final cost. You just get a faster car albeit, one which is not very practical as a daily driver because of the awful fuel consumption in these cars (4-5 km/l), whereas as a type-r would be quite a good daily use car and I am told the fuel milage is good if used carefully.

mahcan i think the best way is to buy a sti in japan & send it to colombo in peices & you can do a restoration project with you chassis.

Yes, that's what I heard too, apparently it's harder to buy the engine, gearbox, ecu and wire harness only nowadays so they just buy a whole car and send only the necessary parts. Maybe the cost will be less if one can find only the needed parts?
