I noticed yesterday my wife's Starlet EP91's Auto gear box does not change 2nd to 3rd as rpm goes up.

When I checked with a Machanic(well experienced and worked at Topyota Lanka some time back) said that it could be adjusted and still i don't have to attend on gear box.

Any idea what sort of adjustment he is talking about and if I need to attend, Is it better to buy a gear box or repair ?

Please share your knowledge.

Gear box (recon) will cost you around 25k. I think it is better to replace than repair.

It could be as simple as replacing the clutch pack inside which should be much cheaper than a new box. I would get another opinion first from someone with proper tools to test and try to isolate the problem.

there is a place in Old Kottawa Road, near temple road junction in Maharagama. He's said to be a well known specialist for auto boxes and the place is always busy - I've never been to try him out as I do not own any automatics.

Why don't you first try adjusting. Like everything else , cables and links too get little loosen up after some time, a small adjustment will always help to sort this out. Try that fist befor eyou embark anything major on teh GB.

There is also another very good AUTO / expert on High Level Rd, Panninpitya,

close to teh Munchi factory on teh left hand side, just one block behind from the main road.

Nam e I can't remember but its somethink like Jayasiri.

Very busy & a quite a good place.

Thanks Tikiri and GMI for valuable inputs.

As Tikiri told , Our mechanic has done some adjustments and now it seems to be ok for the time being.I think I could run for another year or two as it is.

Thank you again. :)

Change your ATF.  It's the first step in auto box maintenance. And yes, it needs too be maintained,..

Wishing you happy motoring ,.\

TT.
