hi guys!

yesterday I've installed a 3" cone air filter with tubing in to my d15 dual-carb motor tubing was done by el**do ...... befor that i had a stock setup with a high flow stock filter ... after installing im experiencing poor performance with acceleration ..... any idea abt the issue guys ???? plz advice

Cheers!

not an expert on performance intakes, but a posibility is that the piping you used was too narrow and has some form of obstruction to the air flow..

i have a 2.5 inch pipe with 2 bends ... nd was done by el**do .... arnt they reliable ??

You should have stayed with the original setup. A good tune is all you need to make it fast. Carbs might not respond to performance mods like an efi car.

A pic of your engine bay would help. Your issue could be something to do with the length of all the piping or the diameter of them. If i were you i'd think twice before going down the modifying path with a dual carb :) Have had one in SL for 3 years and still use one here as the second car, so taking with quite a bit of experience here.:)

to add to this

EFI motors adjust their fuel-air mixture on the fly with the help of the ECU. So when there's increased air flow, it will automatically make the fuel mixture rich. with roughly translates to more fuel burn and more power...

On a carb setup, when you increase the airflow... there's no automated way to richen the fuel mixture.

AFAIK....you'd have to re-jet the carb with a larger jet so more fuel reaches cylinders.

This might not be the case with your scenario but a decent possibility

re-tune the carbs with the new air filter on,and make sure they use a gadget like like syncromate or similer to tune it,cos most guys out there use only their "gut feeling to tune carbs...but this will undoubtedly increase fuel consumption, cos as ripper and others said you have to simply increase the fuel injected to match the increased airflow.

installing a cone filter to a carb is not worth the hassle IMO,cos you'll have constantly clean the filter otherwise it will gather dirt and upset the air/fuel balance, unlike EFI cars it wont re adjust itself.

not expert in carbs but there might be few reasons

1 - if filter is located in the engine bay it will suck hot air

2 - if the piping are too long

3 - when stainless steel piping get hot it will heat the Air too

4 - more air and less fuel, so get it tune again

5 - too many bends in the piping

I am planning to fix a cone air filter to my Mazda (BHALP). Its EFI model. Is it possible to do it? Or have to face the same situation what has happed to Devinda_N?

Google.

Search about your engine and air intake options for it ;)

It is possible...

You know where to come.. to have it tried. My car was an experiment too

Before you buy the the filer.. have a chat with us.

You dont really have to put new jets in to get more fuel in. Simply take it to a good tuner and adjusting the carbs. You would have to get the balance just right though. Otherwise the car would inject more fuel that what is needed at high rpms which would lead to black smoke and poor fuel economy. To tune it properly you'd have to get the reading from the O2 sensor and connect it to an air/fuel ratio gauge. This is how mine was tuned back then.

However, the dual carb setups in the EGs are very complex with loads of vacuum lines and sensors. And some SL mechanics tend to block these lines assuming that it would improve fuel efficiency, etc. Have everything checked before you get it tuned. And also, don't forget to check the condition of the ignition coil. When mine was tuned back then, we couldn't get the A/F ratio right at high rmps. That was after a full clean up of the two carbs. Later we found out that the ignition coil was not giving a strong power supply to the spark plugs. Changed that and then everything was perfect. And the other this with these carbs is that to keep them in a very good tune you'd need regular tuning. As others have also mentioned, carbs don't adjust themselves based on sensor inputs. So you'd have to do the adjustments for them.If you are really interested in increasing performance, pls check the basics first and make sure everything is in proper order and in good working condition. And then work your way up from there...good luck:)
