Two cars from mazda and toyota, both sedans, same engine capacity- both have 1.5L VVTi engines if I am not mistaken, both are roughly about the same price (the toyota has a slightly higher market value just because it is a "toyota")

Ok, Our family thought of getting down a car for a gift permit after looking into the whole process very very deeply. I am now looking at a axela or a corolla (YOM 2003/04)

l personally would go for the axela over the corolla because it looks better than the corolla and is not very common in the roads (121's are flooding the roads) and having driven an axela, the handling is perfect for me :) on a positive note , the 121's fuel consumption makes you fall in love with the car

So, like always I am in doubt <_< I'd be delighted if anyone could explain to me which of these could be a better choice.....

Cheers!

btw fuel consumptions of 121 and Axela differ by much ? [comparing the 1500cc models of both cars]

Maybe the toyota will give you an extra 1.5kmpl than the mazda

KillerB,

I wonder what factor made you to go for a Gift Permit? As per the new Tax reduction, you will be more benefited if you by a car under normal import procedure. as the new tax reduction will not be applicable to the Gift Permit Scheme. (Still you can import a 5 year old vehicle under Gift Permit if I'm correct. Blue Permit will allow for a 10 year old vehicle)

I also planned to go for a Gift permit, but later gave up the idea. Could you please tell me what are the benefits of going for Gift Permit. (Other than the depreciation allowance)

I think the mazda 3 was made for the European market, if so, there is a possibility it would have come with a 2L engine

There is nothing except for the depreciation fact really, but you can import a vehicle that is upto 10 years old, you pay less duty and taxes to srilankan customs (I am still trying to verify this fact) and the only car that I would like, if I am importing under normal import procedure is a corolla AXIO which seems to be beyond my budget and I really don't like the looks and performance of the BELTA/YARIS

I will be all set by august hopefully, wonder why you gave up the idea? It is not much of a hassle if you have the right people to help you with it ;)

i was in a same sort of a dilemma in choosing a car for our family use. since we do not have a permit our choice was down to 2007/8 axela vs. 2007/8 axio (141 corolla). the price of the axela was nearly 2-3 hundered thousand bucks dearer. in the end i decided for an axio because of the unparallel difference in terms of 2nd hand resale value, especially as the cars get older. take the 2nd hand value of a 2001 mazda 323 and a 2001 121 and you'd see the difference. it's over a million bucks of a difference!!!

but your situation is a little bit different than mine coz your target is YOM2003/4 (as oppose to 2007/8 in my case). by then(YOM2003/4) 121 was fast becoming an old model whereas the axela i assume was quite new and therefore you have a unique advatage of axela being a new model at that time. you see, the market first and foremost has a price for a certain model and then only it boils down to YOM. what you loose in terms of 2nd hand market value with the axela (it being not a toyota) you might be able to recover with the novelty of the model. therefore i suggest you going for the axela becuase i assume axela is closer to your heart than 121 and as i explained you don't loose too much in terms of 2nd hand market value. but my verdict is assuming you run not more than 1000km a month. if you run longer then the fuel consumption figures might tilt in favor of 121 again.

cheers and good luck! keep us posted on the eventuality.

axela comes with a 2L engine too and in the japanese auctions that car sells lot cheaper than 1.5L model. but that engine is low tech compared to 1.5L and therefore i think fuel consumption would not be too great. besides i am sure it will be lot more difficult to find a 2nd hand buyer for a 2L car in sri lanka!!!

For the European market they produced 1.4L engine too. Axela came with high quality fabric seats while

Mazda 3 with leather.

Suspension is exactly Ford Focus/Volvo S40 platform. Early(2003/4) Mazda3/Axela had minor suspension issues later resolved. The car has very good handling ability , but has some road noise ,so be careful in tyre selection.

The car is newer in design than T-121.

Thanks Isuru, helpful as always :) Second hand value will not be my major concern here, ownership of a gift permit car cannot be transferred for 3 years so it is vital that I find a car in good condition that will be able to handle 3 years of well... torture

I wont come anywhere near a 1000kms a month, 750-800kms a month maybe and btw don't you think that the market prices of 121's will be affected by the 141's? Same could happen to axela's if 2007/8 axela's start to come in, very unlikely though

Posted
thanks killer-B, btw what average fuel consumption figures can we expect from axela then ? [not sure about 121's either  ]

You'll be looking at something like 9-10kmpl on a axela (within the city)

121's should give you a good 10-11kmpl again, within the city, some say that it does 13-14kmpl but I'm not pretty sure about it. Maybe a 121 owner should clear things up for you

europe and rest of asia than japan got a 1.6L version too. that is the one brought down to sri lanka as brand new imports for duty free permit holders. but this 1.6L version is lesss powerful than 1.5L JDM one.

The 2.0 L is low tech compared to the 1.5L? How come? And won't sticking a bigger engine in the same size car get your more Zoom in the Zoom-zoom-Zoom? ;)

And I find it interesting that the 1.5 is selling at a premium...what's the scene? Is it simply that there's just more market demand for the 1.5L ?

Errrrrrrrrrrrrr............. nooooooooooo......... Carmart used to get down the Mazda3 with 1.6cc engine and that is a tad bit more powerful than the 1.5cc variant JDM. Have tried and tested my self.

Please don't ask about fuel figures cos I couldn't care about it...!! I personally, do not drive my Mazda with "fuel economy in mind".... (same as me taking a women to bed) who cares how much food she consumes, as long as she gives u good time...

Low tech meaning it is a non VVTi engine maybe........ So she drinks more and is better in the roads, given that she cannot be taken onto your bed :D Bugatti, don't try this at home!
